The primary function of an exhaust gasket is to prevent leaking and to ensure that exhaust gas flows through the catalytic converter, which is placed between the engine head and the exhaust. It also aids in closing the space between the engine block and the exhaust pipe. It takes hot exhaust gasses straight from the engine and directs them into an inner \"pipe\" or lengthy chamber, cooled by raw water running through an outer casing. The hot exhaust gasses and water to the riser, where they mix to continue their journey overboard.
