Overview
The Blue Sea Systems 8246 is an AC micro ammeter for showing current draw from 0 to 50A on a compact 2 in (50.8 mm) analog gauge. It reads through the included AC current transformer, with 50 mA AC at full scale, so the meter works with a simple two-wire connection from the coil rather than carrying the measured load through the gauge itself.
On a boat, this gives you a quick visual check of AC demand at the panel when you are tracking shore power load, generator output, or another onboard AC circuit that stays within the meter range. The face is backlit for low-light use, and the lighting circuit can be wired for either 12V or 24V DC.
Key features
- 0 to 50A AC analog scale with 5A increments for quick panel checks
- 2 in (50.8 mm) face size fits compact AC panel layouts
- Included 50A AC current transformer coil reads load without routing the full circuit current through the meter
- Simple two-wire connection from the coil keeps installation straightforward
- Backlit face with separate 12V or 24V DC lighting connection
- Can be installed in either a surface-mount or panel-mount layout
Installation and setup
The transformer coil slips over the AC conductor you want to monitor, then the coil leads connect to the meter. That makes this a practical choice for refits and new panel builds where you want current indication without reworking the main AC wiring path through the gauge itself.
The micro face size helps when panel space is limited, and the surface-mount or panel-mount options give you more freedom in tight helm, cabin, or electrical locker installations.
Compatibility and fit
This model is for AC current only, not DC monitoring. It suits onboard AC systems where a 0 to 50A range matches the circuit being watched and where a small round analog meter is easier to fit than a larger panel instrument.
It is a sensible fit for cruisers, sailboats, and powerboats with a compact AC distribution panel and a separate 12V or 24V DC source available for backlighting. If you want a simple visual reading at the panel instead of a digital display, this meter fits that job well.
