Overview
The Victron Energy Inverter 12/800 VE.Direct is a 12 V DC inverter for running 230 V AC or 120 V AC equipment from a house or service battery bank on board. It sits in the 800 VA class, with 650 W continuous power at 25°C, 560 W continuous power at 40°C and 1500 W peak power for short startup demands.
This model range is a good fit for boats that need AC power for moderate loads such as small tools, chargers, entertainment equipment and galley or cabin electronics when shore power is not available. The 12 V input range is 9.2 to 17 V DC, and the VE.Direct port allows configuration and monitoring through VictronConnect when used with the required USB interface or Bluetooth Smart dongle.
The enclosure has an IP21 protection category and should be installed in a dry, ventilated location away from spray, rain and bilge moisture. The 12 V 800 VA model measures approximately 105 x 230 x 325 mm and weighs about 5.5 kg, so it needs a firm mounting surface and enough room around the vents for cooling.
Key features
- Converts a 12 V DC battery supply to AC power, with variants for 230 V AC and 120 V AC systems.
- 800 VA inverter rating with 650 W continuous output at 25°C and 1500 W peak power for short startup loads.
- VE.Direct port supports monitoring and configuration through VictronConnect with the required optional interface.
- Configurable output frequency at 50 Hz or 60 Hz to match the connected AC system and equipment requirements.
- ECO mode reduces standby consumption when the connected load drops below the configured threshold.
- Remote on/off connection supports installation with an external switch, control panel, BMS or compatible monitoring system.
- DC screw terminals support a practical fixed installation without special crimp tooling at the inverter end.
- Built-in protections cover output short circuit, overload, battery voltage that is too high or too low, high temperature and excessive DC ripple.
Variants
The product is offered in several AC output configurations for different regional onboard electrical systems and outlet standards.
The output voltage, outlet type and listed certification status vary between variants. The 12 V DC input, 800 VA rating, VE.Direct port, IP21 protection category and approximate 105 x 230 x 325 mm 12 V model size are common to the 12/800 VE.Direct range.
- PIN121801100: 230 V AC output with IEC outlet, certification unconfirmed. This version suits installations where the AC side is built around an IEC connection format.
- PIN121801200: 230 V AC output with Schuko outlet, certification unconfirmed. This outlet format is commonly used with European 230 V AC equipment.
- PIN121801300: 230 V AC output with AU/NZ outlet, certification unconfirmed. This configuration matches Australian and New Zealand style 230 V AC plugs.
- PIN121801400: 230 V AC output with UK outlet, certification unconfirmed. This version uses the UK outlet format for vessels wired around that plug standard.
- PIN121800510: 120 V AC output with NEMA GFCI outlet, UL 458 certification. This configuration is for 120 V AC systems where a GFCI protected NEMA outlet is required.
Installation and setup
Install the inverter close to the battery bank to help reduce voltage drop on the DC side. For the 12/800 model, recommended DC cable cross-section is 16 mm² for runs up to 1.5 m and 25 mm² for runs from 1.5 m to 3 m. The internal fuse is a replaceable 150 A MIDI type, and the battery cable should be protected close to the battery when the installation requires it.
The unit should be mounted on a sturdy surface with clear airflow around the housing. It is not a wet-location device, so engine rooms, lockers or technical spaces must be dry, ventilated and protected from washdown water, salt spray and standing moisture.
Electrical and system integration
The VE.Direct port is useful when the inverter is part of a broader Victron electrical system. It can connect to a computer with a VE.Direct to USB interface, to a phone or tablet with a VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle, or to compatible Victron monitoring hardware with the required cable.
On a boat, this makes the inverter easier to commission and check after installation. Settings such as low battery cut-off, restart levels, ECO mode behavior, output voltage and output frequency can be configured rather than leaving the system to operate only on factory defaults.
Use on board
This inverter range is a practical match for coastal cruisers, fishing boats, small workboats and sailboats that need AC power from a 12 V battery bank without stepping up to a larger inverter charger. It is best suited to moderate AC loads where the connected equipment stays within the inverter rating and the battery bank, cabling and protection are sized correctly.
For continuous high loads, large heating appliances or heavy motor loads, check the actual wattage and startup demand before installation. The 1500 W peak rating helps with short startup surges, but the continuous load should remain within the 650 W at 25°C or 560 W at 40°C rating for dependable operation.
