Overview

The Garmin Trailhead Series Appalachian Trail is a 24K topographic map product for compatible Garmin GPS units, covering the Appalachian Trail plus 10 mi (16 km) of extended map coverage on each side. It is built at a detail level comparable to 1:24,000 scale USGS maps, so you can read contour lines, elevations, and land features the way you would on a high-resolution paper topo.

The trail itself is routable from end to end, with basic roads shown for reference. Along the way you get searchable points of interest such as campgrounds, scenic lookouts, picnic sites, and businesses, plus park, forest, recreation, and wildlife-area boundaries.

On compatible devices, the map can show 3-D terrain shading and DEM shaded relief to make steep sections and valleys easier to judge at a glance. Hydrographic detail is included as well, with coastlines, lake and river shorelines, wetlands, and perennial and seasonal streams.

Variants

This product is offered in multiple formats so you can match it to how your Garmin unit accepts maps.

The difference between versions is the delivery method: a preloaded microSD/SD card versus a download installed through Garmin Express.

• 010-C1058-00: Format microSD/SD. Preloaded map card for devices with a compatible card slot; the SD adapter helps when your unit uses full-size SD.
• 010-D1023-00: Format Download. Digital download installed using Garmin Express, which is useful when your device supports map installs over USB instead of loading from a card.

Compatibility and fit

This is a land topographic map product, not a nautical chart. It is meant for use on compatible Garmin GPS devices that support add-on maps, including many handheld units and select GPSMAP units with a card slot and topo map support.

Before purchasing, confirm your device supports the Trailhead Series format you plan to use and that you have the needed storage method: a microSD or SD card slot for the card version, or Garmin Express connectivity for the download version.

Installation and setup

For the microSD/SD version, insert the card into the unit and enable the map in your device map settings if it is not already active. For the download version, connect the device to a computer, install through Garmin Express, then enable the map on the device once the transfer is complete.

If you are running multiple maps at once, keeping only the relevant layers enabled for your trip area can make zooming and searching faster on the plotter or handheld.
