Overview

The Vimar Idea 16591 is an electronic LPG gas detector for flush-mounted Vimar Idea installations on boats and yachts that use 230 V AC service power around the galley or accommodation spaces. It runs on 230 V AC, 50-60 Hz, gives both acoustic and optical alarm signals, and can command a solenoid valve shutoff when gas is detected.

This is a 3-module built-in unit with IP40 protection and a self-extinguishing polycarbonate enclosure, so it belongs in a protected interior mounting point rather than on an exposed deck or in a washdown area. It is calibrated for LPG detection at 9% LEL on iso-butane and uses a semiconductor sensor with thermal compensation.

It makes the most sense on boats that already use Vimar Idea modules and have fixed LPG appliances in enclosed spaces. It is not the right fit for a 12 V or 24 V DC-only system or for an exterior mounting location.

Variants

This product is offered in two color configurations within the same Vimar Idea LPG detector format.

The change across the listed variants is the front color. The 230 V supply, 3-module built-in layout, acoustic and optical alarm, and solenoid-valve control stay the same across the range.

• VM16591.B: Color Ivory. This version suits installations that use lighter Idea plates and trim around the galley or interior switch panels.
• VM16591: Color Gray. This version matches gray Idea modules and darker surrounding trim.

Compatibility and fit

Fit depends on the existing electrical system and the mounting platform. This is a flush-built Vimar Idea module, so it needs a compatible Idea frame and box, and it needs a protected interior location with 230 V AC available.

For LPG use, the detector is mounted low in the space, about 20 to 30 cm above the floor and within roughly 1 to 4 m of the cooker, heater, water heater, or gas cylinder, where air moves naturally. Keep it away from open deck exposure, direct ventilation, sinks, and spots where dirt or moisture can block the sensing openings.

Electrical and system integration

L and N are used for the 230 V AC supply. The detector can pulse a compatible solenoid valve through terminals 6 and 7, and terminals 3, 4, and 5 provide a clean change-over relay for extra alarm signaling or for valve arrangements that need the relay output instead.

More than one detector can be wired to the same manual-reset solenoid valve, which is useful on larger boats with separate enclosed LPG areas. After an alarm event, gas flow is restored by resetting the valve manually.

Maintenance and care

Use the supplied test cylinder for commissioning and routine checks. The detector has an approximate service life of 5 years from installation, so it should be planned into the boat's maintenance schedule rather than left behind a panel without follow-up testing.

The temperature and humidity limits make it a better match for protected accommodation spaces than for damp exterior lockers or areas that see regular spray.
