Overview
The Victron Energy BMV-702 is a precision battery monitor for DC battery systems where accurate state of charge, current draw, consumed amp-hours, voltage, power use, and time remaining are important for day-to-day decisions on board. It works across a 6.5 to 95 VDC supply range, making it suitable for common 12V, 24V, and 48V marine battery banks when installed and configured correctly.
This monitor is especially useful on cruising boats, fishing boats, and sailboats with house banks that support refrigeration, electronics, lighting, pumps, inverters, and other loads. The included 500A shunt measures charge and discharge current, while the display gives the crew a clear view of how much usable energy remains instead of relying on voltage alone.
The BMV-702 also includes an auxiliary input that can be configured for a second battery voltage, battery temperature with an optional sensor, or midpoint voltage monitoring on series battery banks. The head unit has an IP55 protection category but is not intended for outdoor exposure, and the IP21 shunt should be mounted in a dry location away from bilge water and direct washdowns.
Key features
- Monitors battery voltage, current, power, amp-hours consumed, state of charge, and estimated time remaining.
- 6.5 to 95 VDC supply voltage range supports many common marine DC systems, including 12V, 24V, and 48V battery banks.
- Includes a 500A / 50mV shunt for measuring charge and discharge current in the main battery bank.
- Auxiliary input can be used for second battery voltage, battery temperature with the optional sensor, or midpoint voltage monitoring.
- VE.Direct communication port supports integration with compatible Victron GX monitoring systems using the proper cable or interface.
- Programmable visual and audible alarms help flag low state of charge, voltage conditions, and other configured battery events.
- Programmable relay can be used for functions such as load control or generator start logic when wired into a suitable system.
- Stores historical battery data so usage patterns, discharge depth, cycles, and battery behavior can be reviewed over time.
- Flush-mount display with round or square appearance options gives flexibility for helm panels, nav stations, and electrical control areas.
Variants
The BMV-702 is offered in multiple configurations that vary by display color and packaging style. The core monitor function remains the same across the listed configurations when comparing the BMV-702 gray and BMV-702 BLACK versions.
The color option changes the appearance of the head unit on the boat’s panel, while the Standard and Retail styles refer to the sales packaging format rather than a different monitoring function.
- BAM010702000: Gray color with Standard style. The gray head unit suits many light-colored helm panels, nav stations, and interior electrical panels.
- BAM010702000R: Gray color with Retail style. This version uses the same gray appearance and is packaged for retail presentation.
- BAM010702200: Black color with Standard style. The black head unit gives a lower-contrast look on dark dashboards, switch panels, and electronics consoles.
- BAM010702200R: Black color with Retail style. This version uses the black head unit and is packaged for retail presentation.
Installation and setup
The shunt is installed in the main negative battery cable so all loads and charging sources pass through it. This placement is important because any load or charger connected on the wrong side of the shunt can cause readings that do not match the real battery use.
The display connects to the shunt using the included 10 m RJ12 UTP cable, which helps keep the high-current shunt near the battery bank while placing the display where it is easy to read. The head unit is made for flush mounting, with a 63 mm front diameter, a 69 x 69 mm front bezel, and a body diameter and depth of 52 mm by 31 mm.
After installation, the monitor should be configured for the battery bank capacity and charging parameters. This matters for lead-acid, AGM, gel, and lithium systems because state of charge accuracy depends on the correct setup, not only on the hardware.
Compatibility and system integration
The VE.Direct port allows the BMV-702 to share data with compatible Victron monitoring equipment. With a GX device and the correct VE.Direct cable or USB interface, battery information can be viewed locally and, when the wider system is set up for it, through VRM remote monitoring.
Bluetooth monitoring is available by adding a VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle, sold separately. That is useful when the display is mounted inside an electrical locker or behind a panel and the crew still wants to check battery status from a phone or tablet.
Use cases on board
This monitor is a strong match for boats with a dedicated house bank, a starter battery that needs voltage monitoring, or a series battery bank where midpoint monitoring can help reveal imbalance early. It is also useful for owners trying to understand real energy use from refrigeration, autopilots, lighting, pumps, communication gear, and inverter loads during coastal cruising or longer passages.
For best service life, mount the display in a protected panel area and keep the shunt in a dry, ventilated electrical space. It should not be treated as an exposed deck or cockpit washdown component.
