Description  

A popular lubricant, grease is an oily substance that is thick and viscous. It is synthetic or petroleum-derived oil that is kept in place by the gel structure of a thickening agent. The base oil's lubricating properties are complemented by the additives, which improves the oil's resistance to wear and corrosion. It starts with a high viscosity, but as stress or shear is applied, its thickness levels drop, becoming oilier and nearly equaling the thickness of its base ingredient. This lubricant has a property known as thixotropy that sets it apart from similar substances like petroleum jelly. It serves as a barrier against water infiltration, prevents corrosion, and lessens friction that machines suffer.
