Distributor caps and rotors transmit voltage from the ignition coils to the engine's cylinders, igniting the fuel-air mixtures inside and supplying power to the engine. These coils are attached directly to the rotor, and the rotor spins inside the distributor cap. Like all mechanical parts, distributor caps and rotors eventually wear out from a mixture of heat, vibration, excessive voltage, breaking, and carbon deposits and should be replaced. It causes the plastic in the cap to deteriorate over time, and the internal plug wire contacts rust and corrode from spark arcing. DIST.
