The Starter outboard is a pre-engaged starter motor that activates a circuit to open and allow electrical current to transmit from the battery to the boat's starter. When the solenoid engages, it pushes forward the small sprocket gear. It works when the lever inside moves forward, engages with the starter ring gear or flywheel and rotates at the same time. Solenoid fires and gear will move forward, engaging with the flywheel. The bad outboard starter will produce a clicking noise when initiated. The starter motor engages when you turn the ignition on and turns the engine allowing it to suck in air.
