The Inlet valve provides the least resistance to the incoming flow of air and gasoline when the piston begins its induction stroke. The inlet valve is given a lead in the opening before the piston hits the top dead center on the exhaust stroke. It is additionally equipped with a lag in shutting once the piston reaches the bottom dead center and starts the compression stroke to take advantage of the entering mixture's unwillingness to stop flowing when the piston terminates its induction stroke. As a result, the maximum amount of the air and fuel combination is forced into the cylinder, directly affecting how much power the engine produces.
