Overview
The Vimar VM2970 is a 2-module dial thermostat that powers from 100-240 V~ (50/60 Hz) and switches a voltage-free relay contact rated 5(2) A at 240 V~ for ON/OFF control of heating or air conditioning.
It is a good fit for boats that run cabin climate equipment from shore power, a generator, or an inverter and need a simple wall thermostat interface. The front dial sets the temperature, and the central white LED display shows the measured temperature, showing the setpoint when you adjust it.
This is an indoor-use control with an IP30 protection degree, so it belongs in dry interior spaces like the main cabin, staterooms, or pilothouse. The body is compact at about 49 mm high x 44.8 mm wide x 41.5 mm deep, which helps when you are working with shallow bulkheads and standard device boxes.
Key features
- 100-240 V~ (50/60 Hz) supply for onboard AC electrical systems
- Voltage-free relay contact (C-NO) rated 5(2) A at 240 V~ for ON/OFF control
- Adjustable setpoint range of 4°C to 40°C
- Central white LED display with backlighting brightness control
- 2-module format for Vimar plates, to be completed with Eikon, Arké, or Plana cover plates, and compatible with Idea using mounting frame 16723
- IP30 protection degree for dry interior mounting locations
Compatibility and fit
This thermostat is built for Vimar modular installations in the 2-module format. Plan your faceplate and frame choice around the series used on board: Eikon, Arké, or Plana, and for Idea use the dedicated mounting frame 16723.
It can be installed in a flush-mounting box or a surface-mounting box with the appropriate mounting frame and cover plate. On refits, it is worth checking depth behind the panel, especially on thin liners or bulkheads where wiring space is tight.
Electrical and system integration
Power is brought to the L and N terminals using 100-240 V~. The thermostat controls your system through a dry relay contact (C-NO), which is commonly used as a call-for-heat or call-for-cool input on HVAC controllers and fan coil units, or as a control signal for an external contactor when the load is larger than the thermostat contact rating.
Protect the relay contact circuit with a fuse or breaker not exceeding 10 A. The C-NO terminals are not intended for SELV circuits, so avoid tying low-voltage 12 V or 24 V control wiring directly to that contact unless the rest of the installation is designed to meet the required insulation and separation.
Installation and placement on a boat
Thermostats behave best when they can sense the true cabin temperature. Mount it around 1.5 m above the sole, away from direct sun, galleys, dimmers or other warm devices, and away from forced-air streams that can make it short-cycle.
Once installed, day-to-day use is straightforward: turn the dial to change the setpoint and use the front buttons for mode and settings as needed. The display and ring illumination help you check status at a glance during night runs without blasting the cabin with light.
Use cases on board
This thermostat suits cruisers and workboats that want simple ON/OFF temperature control for a cabin heater or air conditioning system. It is also a sensible choice when you are standardizing switchgear and plates across the interior and want the thermostat to match the same modular system.
