It only aids in preventing cavitation and, in the worst-case scenario, complete blow-out of a thru-hub exhaust system by keeping the exhaust gasses in the slipstream (the water flow between the bottom unit and the propeller hub) from causing cavitation (total loss of propeller "grip").
