Overview
The Perko 9601DP is a medium-duty ON/OFF battery disconnect switch for 6 to 32 VDC marine electrical systems, rated for 250 amps continuous and 360 amps intermittent service. It gives you one clear shutoff point between the battery and the boat's DC system, which is useful for lay-up, service work, and emergency isolation.
Its ignition-protected design allows installation in gasoline engine compartments, and the surface-mount body is sized for common battery switch locations at 5-1/4 inches in diameter and 2-5/8 inches deep. The housing uses polycarbonate with brass terminals and 5/16 inch studs, so it fits common marine battery cable terminations on 12V, 24V, and 32V boats.
This is the basic 9601 configuration, so it gives you a battery shutoff that is simple and easy to see, without a key lock and without alternator field disconnect. It works well on boats that want a dedicated master switch near the battery bank or main DC feed.
Key features
- ON/OFF battery disconnect for 6 to 32 VDC systems, including common 12V, 24V, and 32V marine setups
- 250 amp continuous rating with 360 amp intermittent capacity for short higher-load periods
- Ignition-protected construction for use in gasoline engine compartments
- Surface-mount housing with a 5-1/4 inch diameter and 2-5/8 inch depth
- Polycarbonate body, brass terminals, and 5/16 inch terminal studs
- Basic 9601 layout without key lock or alternator field disconnect
Installation and fit
This switch is meant to be mounted where the operator can reach it and where battery cables can stay as short as practical. On center consoles, runabouts, skiffs, sailboats, and compact cruisers, that usually means a battery box area, transom locker, or electrical compartment close to the bank.
The 5/16 inch studs are long enough to handle more than one cable where the installation calls for stacked connections. Boats running larger cable and heavier lugs may need additional clearance behind the switch, which can be added with an optional spacer ring. During installation, the terminal nuts are tightened to 10 ft-lbs, which helps keep high-current connections secure without overstressing the studs.
Electrical integration
The 9601DP works as a main battery shutoff for straightforward DC systems that need a manual disconnect between the battery and the boat. It fits single-bank systems and simple start or house circuits where a clear ON/OFF switch makes more sense than a selector-style battery switch.
Because this version does not include alternator field disconnect, it should be used as a basic master switch and the engine should be shut down before turning the switch to OFF. On boats with gasoline inboards or stern drives, the ignition-protected design is what makes it suitable for engine room installation.
Use on board
This switch is a practical fit for owners who want battery isolation for storage, trailer transport, maintenance, or emergency shutdown without adding a more complex switching system. It suits boats that keep the DC layout simple and want a dedicated disconnect that is easy to reach and easy to confirm at a glance.
