Boat anodes (also known as boat zincs) protect the metal elements of your boat from galvanic corrosion (such as the shaft, rudder, outboard, sterndrive, or propeller). A zinc anode is a sacrificial anode used in cathodic protection to prevent corrosion. It's also a galvanic anode, like the other galvanic anodes constructed of aluminum or magnesium. The protective capabilities of a zinc anode are due to its highly negative reduction potential, which is even lower than the metal it is protecting. Oxidants that corrode metals will oxidize the zinc anode instead of the shielded metal structure, preventing corrosion of the structure.
