Overview
The Blue Sea Systems 8598 is a 230V AC source selection panel for boats that need to switch between three AC inputs from one panel. It comes with three double-pole 16A breakers and one double-pole 32A breaker already installed, and the lockout arrangement keeps separate AC sources from being connected to the system at the same time.
This panel is built around a 10-1/2 x 4-1/2 in face and suits European 230V installations where the boat may have more than one shore feed or a mix of shore and onboard AC sources. Hot, neutral, and safety ground buses are already in place, so it can shorten panel wiring work in a refit or replacement job.
Key features
- Three-source 230V AC selector panel for marine electrical systems
- Three double-pole 16A breakers and one double-pole 32A breaker are pre-installed
- Lockout slides keep AC sources from being tied together during source changes
- Hot, neutral, and safety ground buses are installed and pre-wired
- Red reverse-polarity indicator and green ON LEDs give quick status at the panel
- Backlit circuit label positions are built into the panel face
- 0.125 in 5052-H32 aluminum panel with MIL-C-5541C chemical treatment and a graphite two-part textured polyurethane finish
- Overall size is 10-1/2 x 4-1/2 in with 9-11/16 x 3-11/16 in mounting centers
Compatibility and fit
This panel is for 230V AC layouts and is not the right choice for 120V service. It fits boats that need one selector panel to handle three incoming AC sources while keeping the main AC switching and protection in one compact location.
It also works well as an extension to an existing metal panel setup or as a replacement panel when the vessel already uses this style of cutout and mounting pattern.
Installation and setup
The installed buses and breakers keep the wiring layout straightforward, but the backlight circuit still needs a DC positive feed and a DC ground. When this panel serves as the main shore power disconnect, it should be mounted within 10 feet of the shore power inlet measured along the conductors unless additional overcurrent protection is fitted closer to the inlet.
Mount it where both the front and rear stay protected from water, or use a waterproof shield if either side may be exposed. It should not be installed in gasoline engine spaces, battery compartments, or other areas with explosive vapors because the breakers are not ignition protected.
Use on board
This panel suits cruising boats and working craft that carry more than one AC source and need a clear transfer point between them. It is also a good fit in refits where the owner wants a finished selector panel with source protection, polarity indication, and backlit labeling already integrated.
