Overview
The Blue Sea Systems 8498 is a 120V AC source selection breaker panel for boats that need to manage three AC inputs from one horizontal panel. It is rated for 30A/50A service, uses three double-pole 30A breakers plus one double-pole 50A breaker with lockout slides, and fits a 10.50 in x 4.50 in panel footprint.
This layout makes sense when the boat switches between dock power and other onboard AC sources and you want source control at the panel instead of separate switching hardware elsewhere. Pre-wired hot, neutral, and safety ground buses shorten the wiring work, while reverse polarity and circuit-on indication make it easier to check the system during commissioning and normal use. The white toggle actuators are easy to see, and the backlit label positions help when the panel is checked in low light.
Key features
- 120V AC source selection panel for three AC inputs with a 30A/50A service rating
- Three double-pole 30A breakers and one double-pole 50A breaker with installed lockout slides
- Lockout system prevents two AC sources from being connected at the same time
- Reverse polarity LED for quick wiring checks before the system goes live
- Hot, neutral, and safety ground buses are installed and pre-wired
- Backlit circuit label positions and ON indicator LEDs at each circuit position
- Horizontal 10.50 in x 4.50 in format that works well for panel upgrades and replacement jobs
Installation and setup
Mount it where the front and back of the panel stay protected. If either side can be exposed to water, the panel needs a waterproof shield, and it should not be installed in gasoline engine rooms, battery compartments, or other spaces where explosive vapors can collect because the breakers are not ignition protected.
When this panel serves as the main shore power disconnect, it needs to be within 10 feet of the shore power inlet measured along the conductors, or the system needs additional overcurrent protection within that distance. The backlight board also needs a DC positive feed and DC ground, so the installation involves both AC conductors and a small DC lighting connection.
Compatibility and fit
This panel is for boats wired for 120V AC, not 230V AC, and it fits best where the owner wants fixed source selection with breaker protection in one place. Check the available cutout space, rear wiring clearance, and conductor routing before replacing an older panel or adding a new AC source.
It is a good match for cruisers, sportfishing boats, and other builds that move between shore power and onboard AC sources and need source status that is easy to read at a glance. On a refit, it is most useful when the existing system already calls for separate source inputs rather than a basic single-source main panel.
