Overview
The Victron Energy Isolation Transformer 3600W Auto is a shore power isolation transformer for boats that need a safer AC connection and protection against galvanic corrosion while plugged in at the dock. It provides 3600 W of capacity, automatically detects 115 V or 230 V AC input, and can supply 120 V or 240 V AC output depending on configuration.
This unit is useful on vessels that move between marinas with different shore power standards, since it supports both 50 Hz and 60 Hz systems and keeps the boat electrically isolated from the shore ground. The transformer uses a toroidal construction with a 1:1.05 ratio, which helps compensate for voltage drop often found on marina shore power feeds.
The enclosure is aluminium in blue RAL 5012 with an IP21 protection rating. Published dimensions are 362 x 258 x 221 mm, with a listed technical weight of 21.7 kg for the current 3600 W Auto 115/230 V model.
Key features
- Galvanic isolation between shore power and the vessel helps reduce corrosion risk on shafts, propellers, through-hulls, and other immersed metal parts.
- Automatic input sensing switches between 115 V mode for 88 V to 130 V input and 230 V mode for 185 V to 250 V input.
- Configurable output supports 120 V or 240 V AC for onboard AC distribution, with 32 A output at 115 V and 16 A output at 230 V.
- Soft start limits inrush current so the transformer is less likely to trip the marina breaker when shore power is connected.
- 50 Hz and 60 Hz compatibility suits vessels used across regions, while frequency conversion is not performed.
- Temperature-controlled fan cooling and overtemperature shutdown help protect the transformer during high-load operation.
- LED indicators show operating status, detected input mode, and temperature fan activity for quick checks during commissioning and use.
- IP21 aluminium enclosure is intended for protected installation spaces where it is not directly exposed to spray or washdown.
Variants
This product is offered in two listed configurations for the same 3600 W Auto 115/230 V isolation transformer range.
The power rating, automatic 115/230 V input, and stated input and output voltage class are the same across the listed variants. The listed difference in the provided variant data is weight.
- ITR050362041: 3600 Watt Auto, 115/230 V input and output, 23 kg. This configuration matches the same shore power isolation use case where automatic input voltage handling is needed for a boat AC system.
- ITR050362042: 3600 Watt Auto, 115/230 V input and output, 22 kg. This configuration keeps the same electrical role while using the lighter listed weight for planning mounting support and handling during installation.
Installation and setup
The transformer belongs in the AC shore power path between the shore inlet and the vessel AC loads. AC input connects to the shore power side, and AC output connects to the onboard AC distribution side. The AC output must be configured for 115 V or 230 V use with the included jumper wires before operation.
Minimum cable cross-section depends on voltage and load. For the 3600 W model, use 6 mm² cable for 115 V installations and 2.5 mm² cable for 230 V installations, or the equivalent wiring specified by the installer for the vessel and local code requirements.
Electrical and system integration
A GFCI should be installed on the AC output side of the transformer. For correct GFCI operation, the output neutral is linked to output earth using the included green and yellow jumper between the specified internal terminals.
When the vessel is hauled out or stored on land, the unit provides a way to connect shore earth directly to vessel earth using the supplied jumper. This is an important safety step for maintenance or winter storage when the boat is no longer in the water.
Use cases on board
This transformer is a good match for cruising boats, yachts, and workboats that spend regular time connected to marina shore power and need a dedicated barrier between shore-side earth and the vessel ground system. It is especially relevant for boats with mixed 115 V and 230 V shore power exposure, or for owners upgrading an AC system where corrosion control and shore power safety are both priorities.
