To fit almost every outboard motor or stern drive unit, Handi-Man Marine manufactures a selection of brass and stainless-steel shear pins. Each has a cotter pin included.

A shear pin shields the propeller against unintentional collision. When the propeller collides with an underwater object, such as a rock, tree stump, or other large or heavy, the shear pin will break off, allowing the driveshaft to rotate while the propeller is disengaged. Shear pins are easily replaced, even when floating in the water, using just basic tools or no tools at all.
