Volvo Penta is frequently multi-layered and engineered to endure intense pressure and high temperatures. The primary function of an exhaust gasket is to prevent leaking and to ensure that exhaust gas flows through the catalytic converter, which is placed between the engine head and the exhaust. It also aids in closing the space between the engine block and the exhaust pipe.

It takes hot exhaust gasses straight from the engine and directs them into an inner "pipe" or lengthy chamber, cooled by raw water running through an outer casing. The hot exhaust gasses and water are delivered to the riser, where they mix to continue their journey overboard.

Inboard engines, exhaust manifolds, and risers are metal castings that convey hot exhaust gasses away from the engine.
