Overview
The Victron Energy Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC Charger Isolated is an isolated DC-DC charger for dual-battery systems on boats, using adaptive three-stage charging to charge a service battery from a starter battery and alternator.
This Orion-Tr Smart range covers 12 V and 24 V input and output combinations, with the listed variants rated from 10 A to 20 A continuous output current at nominal output voltage. The 12 V input models work across an 8-17 V input range, while the 24 V input models work across a 16-35 V input range.
Built-in Bluetooth makes setup and monitoring practical from a phone or tablet through VictronConnect, which is useful when the charger is mounted in a locker, engine-room electrical space, or battery compartment area. The isolated design separates input, output, and case, which helps when the starter and service sides of the boat need to remain electrically separated.
Key features
- Adaptive bulk, absorption, and float charging helps manage service-bank charging for lead acid and lithium batteries.
- Built-in Bluetooth allows monitoring, configuration, and firmware updates through VictronConnect without adding a separate display.
- Galvanic isolation separates input, output, and case, useful where starter and house battery circuits should stay electrically separated.
- Engine running detection and remote on/off control help prevent starter-battery discharge when the alternator is not supplying power.
- Supports 12 V and 24 V system combinations in this range, including step-up, step-down, and same-voltage charging.
- Screw-terminal DC connections accept cable up to 16 mm² / AWG6, with 1.6 Nm terminal torque for installation.
- Operating temperature range is -20°C to +55°C, with full rated output up to 40°C and derating above that point.
Variants
This Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC Charger Isolated range is offered in four configurations for different input voltage, output voltage, and rated output current requirements.
The voltage conversion and current rating change by variant. The charging platform, Bluetooth setup, isolated DC design, screw-terminal connections, 130 x 186 x 70 mm housing size, and 1.3 kg weight are consistent across these four listed models.
- ORI122424120 has 12 V input, 24 V output, and 10 A rated output current. This configuration suits a boat that needs to charge a 24 V service battery from a 12 V start battery and alternator side.
- ORI241224120 has 24 V input, 12 V output, and 20 A rated output current. This configuration fits systems where a 24 V engine or starting circuit feeds a 12 V service battery bank.
- ORI121222120 has 12 V input, 12 V output, and 18 A rated output current. This configuration keeps both sides at 12 V while adding regulated charging and isolation between the start and service batteries.
- ORI242428120 has 24 V input, 24 V output, and 12 A rated output current. This configuration keeps both sides at 24 V for boats built around a 24 V DC system.
Installation and setup
Mount the charger vertically on a non-flammable surface with the power terminals facing down. Leave at least 10 cm of clearance above and below the unit so heat can move away from the housing, and mount it close to the battery without placing it directly above the battery.
Use flexible multi-stranded copper battery cables and protect the circuit with external battery protection fusing matched to the system voltage and cable run. The unit is not protected against reverse battery polarity, so polarity should be checked before the battery cables are connected.
Electrical and system integration
The charger can operate as a DC-DC battery charger or as a power supply with fixed output, depending on how it is set up in VictronConnect. In charger mode, the correct battery algorithm should be configured before the service battery is connected.
It is a practical fit for cruisers, fishing boats, workboats, and sailboats that need controlled alternator charging for a separate house bank, especially where 12 V and 24 V circuits coexist on board. It does not have a VE.Direct port, so setup and local monitoring are handled through Bluetooth and VictronConnect rather than a wired VE.Direct connection.
