Overview
The Blue Sea Systems Traditional Metal AC Main Distribution Panel is a boat AC distribution panel range with an analog AC voltmeter, a main breaker, branch circuit switching, reverse polarity indication, and installed AC buses. This parent listing covers two configurations: a 120V AC 3-position panel and a 230V AC 8-position panel for European-style AC systems.
Each panel gives the helm, cabin, or electrical locker a clear point for managing shore power or other onboard AC sources. The analog voltmeter lets the operator check incoming AC voltage at a glance, while the circuit position LEDs and backlit label areas help identify energized circuits during night operation or in low-light cabins.
Key features
- Traditional metal AC main distribution panel format for boat AC branch circuit control and monitoring.
- Analog AC voltmeter matched to the selected voltage configuration, with 0-150V AC metering on the 120V panel and 0-250V AC metering on the 230V panel.
- Red reverse polarity LED helps flag incorrect AC source wiring before the system is used.
- AC hot, neutral, and safety ground buses are installed and fully pre-wired to reduce panel wiring time.
- ON indicating LEDs are installed in the circuit positions for a clear view of energized branch circuits.
- Backlit circuit label positions are standard, so no separate backlight kit is needed for the labels.
- Panel buses are sized for 100A of continuous current, with the final circuit protection determined by the installed breakers and the vessel wiring.
- Panel face uses 0.125 in 5052-H32 aluminum alloy with a graphite 2-part textured polyurethane finish.
Variants
This product is offered in two AC voltage and panel-size configurations. The main differences are nominal AC voltage, number of positions, breaker ratings, voltmeter range, and overall panel height.
The common panel features stay the same across the range, including the reverse polarity LED, circuit ON LEDs, backlit label positions, installed AC buses, and Traditional Metal panel construction.
- 8588: 230V AC, 8 positions, 5.25 in wide x 11.25 in high panel, 16A double-pole AC main breaker, 8A branch breakers, and a 0-250V AC voltmeter. This configuration fits 230V AC boat systems and gives more circuit positions for vessels with several AC loads.
- 8043: 120V AC, 3 positions, 5.25 in wide x 7.50 in high panel, 30A double-pole AC main breaker, 15A branch breakers, and a 0-150V AC voltmeter. This configuration suits smaller 120V AC installations where a compact main panel with voltage monitoring is needed.
Installation and fit
The panel is intended for protected mounting locations where the front and back of the panel are not exposed to water. It should not be installed in gasoline engine rooms, battery compartments, propane lockers, or other spaces where flammable vapors may collect, since the circuit breakers are not ignition protected.
When the panel is used as the main shore power disconnect, it should be located within 10 ft of the shore power inlet or the electrical attachment point of a permanently installed shore power cord, measured along the feed conductors. Longer runs require additional circuit protection within that 10 ft distance.
Electrical system use
This panel is a practical match for refits, AC system upgrades, and replacement panel projects on cruising boats, fishing boats, and sailboats that use a conventional AC distribution layout. The 120V version fits many North American shore power systems, while the 230V version matches vessels wired for 230V AC service.
Final installation should be handled by someone familiar with marine AC systems, proper wire sizing, grounding practice, and the vessel’s shore power arrangement. Branch breaker ratings must be checked against the connected loads and conductor sizes before the panel is put into service.
