Overview
The Victron Energy Skylla-TG GMDSS Charger is a 24 V battery charger and power supply range for GMDSS installations, available in 30 A and 50 A charge-current versions with a 90 to 265 V AC input range. It is built for vessels that need a dedicated charger for the GMDSS battery supply, with direct connection points for both the battery and the GMDSS system.
Monitoring and alarm data are handled through a VE.Net GMDSS panel, with a standard 8-wire UTP cable linking the charger to the panel. The charger uses an IUoUo three-step charge characteristic, with 28.5 V absorption and 26.5 V float charging values, and the charge voltage can be adjusted for VRLA or flooded battery systems.
The aluminum enclosure measures 485 x 250 x 147 mm and carries an IP21 protection rating, so it belongs in a dry, protected equipment space rather than an exposed cockpit or deck locker. With forced cooling and an operating temperature range of -40 to +50°C, it is suited to engine-room-adjacent technical spaces when installed with enough ventilation and service access.
Key features
- 24 V GMDSS charger range with 30 A and 50 A charge-current options for different battery-bank requirements.
- Universal 90 to 265 V AC input range with 45 to 65 Hz frequency support for shore power or onboard AC supplies within specification.
- IUoUo three-step charging with 28.5 V absorption and 26.5 V float values, with adjustable charge voltage for VRLA or flooded battery systems.
- Direct battery and GMDSS system connections help keep monitoring and alarm wiring centralized at the charger.
- VE.Net GMDSS panel compatibility allows display of voltage, alarm, capacity and battery time-to-go data when the panel is installed.
- Aluminum enclosure in blue RAL 5012 with IP21 protection and forced cooling for protected onboard mounting locations.
- Built-in protection covers output short circuit, battery reverse polarity detection, battery voltage too high and temperature too high conditions.
- Listed standards include IEC 60945 for maritime navigation and radiocommunication equipment, along with EN safety and immunity standards.
Variants
The Skylla-TG GMDSS Charger is offered in two configurations that differ by charge current. Both variants share the same 24 V GMDSS platform, 90 to 265 V AC input range, IP21 enclosure rating and 485 x 250 x 147 mm case size.
The main selection point is charger output current, which should be matched to the vessel battery-bank size, recharge expectations and the electrical plan for the GMDSS installation.
- SDTG2400302: 30 A charge current. This version fits 24 V GMDSS battery systems where a 30 A charger is the required size; at 110 V AC input, charge current is limited to 22 A.
- SDTG2400504: 50 A charge current. This version keeps the same Skylla-TG GMDSS layout while providing higher charging output for 24 V installations that call for more charger current.
Installation and setup
This charger should be mounted in a protected technical space where the IP21 enclosure is appropriate, with clearance for airflow around the forced-cooling system. Keep access open for cable inspection, terminal work and future service, especially on commercial or offshore vessels where GMDSS equipment needs to remain easy to verify.
The battery connection uses two 1.5 m cables, and the GMDSS connection uses one 1.5 m cable, with the positive feed taken directly from the battery. The AC connection is made with a three-wire 2.5 mm² cable with a 2 m length, so cable routing and strain relief should be planned before mounting the unit.
Monitoring and GMDSS integration
The charger works with the VE.Net GMDSS panel for alarm and operating data, including battery capacity and time-to-go information during a power supply blackout. The panel and UTP cable are separate accessories, so they should be accounted for when building a complete GMDSS charging and monitoring system.
The panel is pre-programmed for GMDSS functionality, while settings can still be changed through its menu when the installation calls for adjustment. This makes the system practical for refits where the charger, battery and alarm display need to be integrated without adding separate monitoring modules.
Battery compatibility
The Skylla-TG GMDSS Charger is intended for 24 V VRLA or flooded battery systems where the charge voltage is set correctly for the battery type and installation. It can also operate as a power supply, which is useful where the charger must support onboard GMDSS loads while maintaining the dedicated battery bank.
Use cases on board
This charger range is a strong match for vessels with a dedicated 24 V GMDSS battery supply, including offshore yachts, workboats and commercial craft that need monitored emergency communication power. It is also useful in refit projects where a wall-mounted charger with documented maritime standards, alarm support and clear variant choices simplifies the replacement process.
