Overview
The Blue Sea Systems P12 is a 12V DC mounted marine battery charger for boats that need controlled charging across up to three battery banks. This parent listing covers the P12 charger in 25A and 40A total output current configurations, both using a four-stage charging profile with a PreFloat stage that helps keep full batteries from staying in absorption longer than needed.
The charger works with AGM, flooded lead acid, gel, and TPPL batteries, and it also allows a user-defined charge profile for systems that need custom settings. It accepts 115-230V AC input at 45-65Hz, has one negative and three positive outputs with M6 studs, and uses a large onboard display with plain-language menus in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
For marine electrical systems, the P12 is useful on cruising boats, fishing boats, and larger day boats where the house and starting banks need managed charging from shore power or onboard AC. Battery temperature compensation, ACR charge coordination, and built-in fault protection help make it a practical fit for dry-mounted onboard installations.
Key features
- 12V DC charger family available in 25A and 40A total output current configurations.
- Three positive outputs support charging for up to three 12V battery banks from one charger.
- Four-stage charging with PreFloat helps reduce unnecessary absorption time on batteries that are already near full charge.
- Compatible with AGM, flooded lead acid, gel, and TPPL battery types, with a user-defined profile available for custom charging needs.
- Universal 115-230V AC input with 45-65Hz frequency range for common shore power and onboard AC sources.
- Charge Coordination works with Blue Sea Systems Automatic Charging Relays to manage ACR state during charging.
- Battery temperature compensation adjusts charging voltage based on measured battery temperature.
- Ignition protected construction supports installation in appropriate marine spaces where ignition protection is required.
- Protection includes AC over and under voltage shutdown with automatic restart, DC over voltage protection, reverse polarity protection, surge protection, and short circuit protection.
- Finned aluminum case helps move heat away from the charger electronics during operation.
Variants
The P12 charger is offered in two output current configurations for 12V DC systems. Both variants share the same core charger platform, display interface, supported battery profiles, three positive outputs, one negative output, M6 stud connections, and included battery temperature sensor.
The main differences are total output current, AC input current, and recommended maximum battery bank capacity. The 25A version is rated for battery bank sizes up to 330Ah, while the 40A version is rated for battery bank sizes up to 440Ah.
- 7531, total output current 25A. This configuration fits 12V systems where 25A of total charging capacity is the right match for the installed battery bank size and available AC supply.
- 7532, total output current 40A. This configuration gives the same P12 charging platform with higher total charging output for 12V battery systems that call for 40A capacity.
Installation and setup
This is a dry-mount charger, so it belongs in a protected onboard location rather than an exposed deck or washdown area. Leave room around the finned case for airflow, keep the display reachable for setup and diagnostics, and route AC and DC cabling so terminals remain accessible for inspection.
The charger uses one negative and three positive DC outputs with M6 studs. Proper wire sizing, overcurrent protection, strain relief, and terminal torque should be handled as part of the vessel’s electrical installation, especially when charging multiple banks in a high-vibration marine environment.
Electrical and battery compatibility
The P12 is built around 12V battery systems and supports common lead-acid battery chemistries found on boats, including AGM, flooded lead acid, gel, and TPPL. The user-defined charge profile is useful when the battery installation requires settings outside the standard profiles.
When used with compatible Blue Sea Systems ACR installations, Charge Coordination helps manage relay behavior while charging so each battery bank can reach the proper float stage. That matters on boats with separate start and house banks, where one bank may recover faster than another.
Protection and operation
The charger monitors several fault conditions that matter in marine service, including AC input voltage problems, battery temperature limits, DC over voltage, reverse polarity, surge events, and short circuits. The diagnostic display helps make setup and troubleshooting easier at the panel instead of forcing the installer to interpret only indicator lights.
Operating temperature range is -20 degrees C to 70 degrees C, which gives the charger room for real engine room and utility space conditions when it is mounted correctly and kept within its dry-location requirements.
