Overview
The Victron Energy Energy Shunt is a precision DC current shunt for measuring high current in battery and power distribution systems on boats. The range covers 500 A, 1000 A, 2000 A, and 6000 A ratings, with a 50 mV measurement output across all versions and M10 main terminals for heavy DC cabling.
It is installed in series with the DC circuit so a compatible meter or battery monitor can read the small voltage drop and convert it into current data. On board, that makes it useful for house battery banks, inverter/charger feeds, high-output charging circuits, and other DC runs where current monitoring needs to be accurate and repeatable.
This part measures current only; it does not replace a fuse, breaker, or battery switch in the DC protection scheme. The selected rating should match the expected circuit current, cable size, lug hardware, and the settings supported by the monitoring equipment.
Key features
- Measures high DC current using a 50 mV shunt signal.
- Available in 500 A, 1000 A, 2000 A, and 6000 A current ratings.
- M10 main terminals suit heavy DC cable lugs used in high-current installations.
- Supports battery monitoring and current measurement in marine DC systems when paired with a compatible meter or monitor.
- Useful for inverter/charger circuits, battery bank monitoring, charging system checks, and high-current DC distribution.
- Passive measuring component that should be installed with separate circuit protection where required by the system design.
Variants
This range is offered in four current ratings. The 50 mV measurement output stays consistent across the range, while the selected amp rating changes to match the current level of the DC circuit being monitored.
The main connection style is M10 across the Victron Energy shunt range. Match the variant to the monitor configuration, cable size, terminal hardware, and maximum current expected in the installation.
- SHU500050100: 500 A current rating. This rating suits lower high-current DC circuits, such as many house-bank or inverter-feed monitoring installations, when the expected current remains within the system design limits.
- SHU102050200: 1000 A current rating. This rating gives more capacity for larger battery banks, charging sources, or inverter systems that need a 1000 A at 50 mV shunt.
- SHU202050200: 2000 A current rating. This configuration is for very high-current DC systems where the monitoring device is set for a 2000 A at 50 mV shunt.
- SHU602050200: 6000 A current rating. This configuration is for specialized high-current installations and should be matched with cable, busbar, overcurrent protection, and monitoring equipment specified for that current level.
Installation and setup
Mount the shunt in a dry, serviceable electrical area such as a battery compartment or DC distribution space, away from loose conductive items and direct spray. The installation should allow the main cable lugs and small sense connections to be inspected without disturbing nearby wiring.
In most battery-monitor installations, the shunt is placed in the negative return path so all charge and load current passes through it. The monitoring equipment must be configured for the selected current rating and 50 mV shunt value so the displayed current and energy readings stay meaningful.
Compatibility and fit
Use this shunt with monitoring equipment that supports external 50 mV shunts and the chosen amp rating. It is a practical match for boats with larger DC loads, added inverter capacity, upgraded battery banks, or charging systems where the standard shunt rating is not enough for the expected current.
