Overview
The Garmin 010-11324-00 is a rudder angle analog adapter that converts an existing analog rudder-angle gauge or sensor signal into NMEA 2000 data for display on compatible instruments and chartplotters. It draws power from the NMEA 2000 bus (9 to 16 Vdc), uses a LEN of 2 (100 mA), and carries a total cable length of 16 ft (4.9 m) to help reach from the helm area to the network backbone.
This adapter is meant for boats that already have a rudder-angle sender but want the rudder position to show up on a modern NMEA 2000 network. The housing is waterproof to IPX7 (IEC 60529) for typical bilge-area splashes and washdowns, but it should not be mounted where it will be regularly submerged.
Key features
- Converts analog rudder-angle information into NMEA 2000 data (transmits PGN 127245 Rudder) for network displays
- Wiring supports connection to an analog rudder-angle gauge, a resistive sensor, or a 0 to 5 Vdc sensor (includes a 5 V output for voltage-type sensors)
- Powered by the NMEA 2000 bus (9 to 16 Vdc), 1.1 W max, LEN 2 (100 mA)
- IPX7 waterproof rating (IEC 60529) for washdown-prone mounting locations that are not continuously submerged
- 16 ft (4.9 m) total cable length and compact body size of 24.7 x 17.0 x 78.6 mm for easier routing and mounting in tight helm spaces
- NMEA 2000 certified for clean integration on compliant networks
What's included
- GRA 10 rudder angle adapter with attached cabling and wiring harness (16 ft total cable length)
- NMEA 2000 T-connector
Installation and setup
Plan the mounting spot so the adapter can reach both the analog gauge or sensor and the NMEA 2000 backbone. A practical target is to stay within 173 in. (4.4 m) of the analog gauge or sensor so you can land the bare wires without splicing. After wiring, cover exposed conductors with heat-shrink tubing and secure the harness to reduce vibration wear and chafe.
To join the network, add the included T-connector into the backbone and connect the adapter to it. If the adapter cannot reach the backbone directly, a NMEA 2000 drop cable can be used up to 20 ft (6 m). Rudder angle calibration is done from a compatible display on the network so the shown port and starboard angles match the actual steering stops.
Compatibility and fit
This adapter relies on an existing rudder-angle sender or an analog rudder-angle gauge on the boat. Confirm whether the sender is a resistive type or a 0 to 5 Vdc type before wiring, since the harness uses different leads depending on sensor style. The signal is then available anywhere on the NMEA 2000 network for supported displays and system pages.
Electrical and network integration
The unit takes its power from the NMEA 2000 bus and does not require a separate power feed. Make sure the NMEA 2000 network is powered correctly with a single network power connection, and account for the device load (LEN 2) when sizing the network power and backbone.
Materials and environmental notes
The case is an overmolded thermoplastic rubber construction with PVC jacketed cabling and molded strain reliefs at the connectors. Operating temperature range is -15 C to 70 C (5 F to 158 F). Keep the adapter at least 2 in. (5 cm) from a magnetic compass to avoid interference.
Use cases on board
This is a good fit for repowers and helm refits where the steering system already has an analog rudder angle sender, but the crew wants rudder position visible on a NMEA 2000 display page. It is also useful when troubleshooting steering and autopilot behavior, since the rudder angle value can be monitored digitally at the helm while underway.
