Overview
The Garmin 010-10817-01 is a weather cap that covers an exposed NMEA 2000 cable connector to help keep moisture, salt spray, and debris off the contacts when the plug is not mated.
On boats, NMEA 2000 connectors often live behind the helm, inside console cavities, and in other spots that stay damp and collect grime. Capping unused connectors keeps the network cleaner and helps avoid the intermittent issues that can show up when pins get contaminated.
Key features
- Protects an unused NMEA 2000 cable connector from water intrusion, salt buildup, and dirt
- Helps keep connector pins cleaner during troubleshooting, upgrades, and seasonal storage
- Quick to install and remove without tools, so it is easy to keep up with routine service work
- Useful for spare drop cables, temporary disconnects, or future expansions where a plug may sit exposed
- Maintains a cleaner NMEA 2000 network environment in high-humidity and saltwater setups
Installation and setup
Dry the connector and wipe off any salt residue before installing the cap. Press the cap onto the exposed connector until it is fully seated, then leave it in place until the connection is made again.
If the connector has already been exposed for a while, cleaning the pins and threads first makes a noticeable difference in how well everything seats and stays protected.
Compatibility and fit
This cap is intended for NMEA 2000 cable connectors on marine networks. It is a protective cover, not a network terminator, and it does not replace the required termination at the ends of a backbone.
If your system uses a different connector style for other Garmin cabling, match the cap to the connector type on the boat so it seats properly.
Use cases on board
This cap makes sense for any boat with an NMEA 2000 backbone where spare drops, extensions, or service leads may be left disconnected behind the dash or in an electronics locker. It is also handy when removing displays or sensors for winter storage and you want to leave the network wiring tidy and protected.
Maintenance and care
Rinse salt off with fresh water when needed and let the cap dry before reusing it. Keeping the cap clean prevents grit from getting pushed into the connector when it is installed.
