Overview
The Attwood Marine Utility Snap Hook is a spring-loaded snap hook for making quick utility connections on board, with light-duty and heavy-duty versions for different safe-load needs. It is useful for securing loose gear, connecting tie-down lines, clipping utility rope, and creating temporary attachment points around a boat, trailer, dock box, or storage area.
The range includes a 1/4 in ring diameter option rated for a 500 lbs maximum safe load and a 5/8 in ring diameter option rated for a 2,500 lbs maximum safe load. Zinc-plated steel construction and a spring-loaded closure make the hook practical for marine utility work where fast attachment and removal matter, while the load rating helps match the hook to the job.
Key features
- Spring-loaded closure helps the hook clip on and release quickly without a separate pin or latch.
- Zinc-plated steel construction suits general marine utility use when the hook is rinsed and maintained after saltwater exposure.
- Available in light-duty and heavy-duty configurations so the safe-load rating can match the line, gear, or tie-down point being used.
- Ring diameter options of 1/4 in and 5/8 in support different rope, cable, and attachment setups.
- Useful for non-permanent connections on boats, trailers, docks, storage lockers, and general waterfront gear.
Variants
This utility snap hook is offered in two configurations with different duty ratings, ring diameters, and maximum safe loads.
Both variants use a spring-loaded snap-hook format and zinc-plated steel construction. The main difference is the working capacity and ring size, which affects how the hook pairs with rope, cable, straps, or hardware already on the boat.
- 7653L3: Light-duty version with 1/4 in ring diameter and 500 lbs maximum safe load. This size works well for lighter utility tie-downs, loose gear control, and quick connections where a smaller ring is easier to fit through compact hardware.
- 7640-3: Heavy-duty version with 5/8 in ring diameter and 2,500 lbs maximum safe load. The larger ring and higher safe-load rating suit heavier utility connections where the hook needs to work with larger line, cable, or attachment points.
Installation and use
No electrical setup, drilling, or network connection is involved. Match the ring diameter to the line, cable, strap, or fixed eye being used, then clip the snap hook into place and confirm that the spring closure returns fully before loading it.
This hook is for utility securing and connection tasks, not for lifting people, overhead lifting, life-safety use, towing beyond its stated safe load, or permanent mooring loads. The safe-load rating should be treated as the upper limit for the hook itself, while the complete setup is only as strong as the weakest connected part.
Materials and care
Zinc-plated steel gives the hook a protective finish for general marine use, but it is not the same as stainless steel. After saltwater exposure, rinse with fresh water, dry the hook when practical, and check the spring action and plating condition during routine gear inspection.
This snap hook is a practical match for boat owners who need a simple connection point for cockpit gear, trailer accessories, dockside lines, storage items, or fishing and cruising equipment that is clipped on and removed often.
