Overview
The Garmin 010-10888-00 is a retractable lanyard that keeps a compatible handheld GPS or satellite communicator attached to you while still letting it extend up to 28 inches for use. The spring-loaded reel is rated to retract devices up to 6 oz, helping keep a handheld close when your hands are busy.
On a boat, it’s a practical way to cut down the risk of a handheld sliding off a console or going overboard when you’re checking position at the helm, stepping onto the dock, or moving around the cockpit in chop.
The clip mounts on your person or gear, and the quick-connect lanyard attachment lets you take the handheld on and off without re-tying knots each time.
Key features
- Spring-loaded tether extends up to 28 inches for screen and button access, then retracts to keep the handheld close
- Rated to retract devices up to 6 oz
- Clip attachment for belt loops, backpack straps, and similar gear attachment points
- Quick-connect lanyard attachment for fast connect and disconnect at the device lanyard point
- Commonly used with handheld Garmin lines such as GPSMAP 78, GPSMAP 79 series, GPSMAP 86 series, GPS 73, and select inReach and eTrex or Oregon handhelds that accept a lanyard attachment
What’s included
- Retractable lanyard with clip
- Two quick-connect lanyard attachments
Compatibility and fit
This tether connects to the lanyard attachment point on compatible Garmin handhelds. If your handheld is in a case, make sure the case leaves the lanyard point accessible and that the connector can seat cleanly without twisting.
The reel is rated for devices up to 6 oz. If your handheld is heavier than that, it may not fully retract, and the extra weight can put more strain on the clip and attachment point.
Installation and daily use
Clip the unit to a belt loop or a secure strap where the reel can hang freely. Attach a quick-connect lanyard piece to the handheld’s lanyard point, then connect it to the tether. When you need to read the screen, pull out the line with steady tension and guide it back in rather than letting it snap-retract.
In the cockpit, keep the line routed so it won’t catch on a throttle, wheel, or deck hardware as you move around.
Maintenance and care
After use in salt spray, rinse the lanyard and clip with fresh water and let everything dry before stowing. Periodically check the lanyard connection and clip tension, especially if it has been snagged or pulled hard.
