Overview
The Victron Energy ASS030543020 is a GlobalLink 520 4G LTE-M remote monitoring device for bringing Victron system data into the VRM portal when the boat does not have dependable Wi-Fi or Ethernet available. It runs from an 8 to 70 VDC supply, connects directly to up to two VE.Direct devices, and includes 5 years of cellular connectivity through its factory-installed data SIM.
For a marine electrical system, the main value is visibility when the vessel is away from shore power, unattended at the dock, or running with solar and battery monitoring equipment on board. Battery monitors, SmartShunts, MPPT solar chargers, VE.Direct inverters, and compatible Victron Smart products can send key data such as battery state of charge, PV yield, voltage, current, alarm status, and selected sensor readings to VRM.
The unit measures 123 x 67 x 23 mm and is intended for wall mounting in a protected location. It has an internal antenna plus an SMA connector for an optional external antenna, which is useful when the monitoring unit needs to sit inside a cabinet, technical locker, or other area where signal strength may be limited.
Key features
- 4G LTE-M cellular connection for VRM monitoring without relying on the boat's local internet connection.
- Pre-installed data SIM with 5 years of included connectivity, reducing setup work for remote installations.
- Two isolated VE.Direct ports for hard-wired connection to compatible Victron devices.
- Bluetooth support for Instant Readout from compatible Victron Smart products and RuuviTag sensors.
- Two digital inputs that can also work as pulse counters for added monitoring points.
- One remote controllable relay with NO and NC contacts, rated up to 30 VDC at 2 A or 125 VAC at 0.5 A.
- Wide 8 to 70 VDC input range for use across common low-voltage DC battery systems.
- Internal antenna with SMA connection for an optional external LTE-M antenna when reception needs improvement.
- Operating temperature range of -20 to +50 °C for protected technical spaces on board.
Installation and setup
Mount the GlobalLink 520 close to the Victron equipment being monitored, then connect compatible devices by VE.Direct cable or Bluetooth, depending on the device. VE.Direct cables are not included, so cable length should be planned around the actual mounting location in the boat.
Power is supplied from the DC system using the included fused power cable. Once powered, the status LED shows the connection process and connected device status, and the installation is added to VRM using the Portal ID on the unit. The enclosure is not rated for outdoor use, so it should be installed away from spray, washdowns, bilge moisture, and direct weather exposure.
Compatibility and system integration
The GlobalLink 520 works well for boats using Victron solar charging, battery monitoring, or small inverter systems where full-time remote visibility is more important than running a larger communication hub. It can report data from supported VE.Direct products and compatible Bluetooth smart devices, including many BMV battery monitors, SmartShunts, SmartSolar MPPT controllers, BlueSolar MPPT controllers with VE.Direct, selected VE.Direct inverters, Smart IP43 Chargers, RuuviTag sensors, Lithium Smart Batteries, Smart BatteryProtect units, and Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC Chargers.
It is not a replacement for every Victron communication device. VE.Bus inverter/chargers cannot be connected to the GlobalLink 520 through a VE.Bus Smart Dongle, and compatibility should be checked against the specific Victron equipment already installed on the vessel before purchase.
Cellular and antenna notes
LTE-M coverage is required at the installation area. For a fiberglass boat with the unit mounted high in a dry locker, the internal antenna may be enough. Metal enclosures, deep machinery spaces, and shielded equipment compartments can reduce reception, so the SMA antenna connection gives a clean path for adding an external antenna in a better signal location.
This product is a good match for boat owners, installers, and fleet operators who want battery, solar, and system status available through VRM while the vessel is on a mooring, stored remotely, or moving between marinas.
