Overview
The Victron Energy SBS050150200 is a Smart Battery Sense Long Range unit that measures battery voltage and temperature at the battery and sends that information wirelessly to compatible Victron MPPT solar chargers through VE.Smart Network. The long range version supports communication up to 10 m, which is useful on boats where the battery bank and solar charger are not mounted in the same locker or electrical panel.
By taking voltage directly at the battery terminals, the charger can work with a more accurate view of battery voltage instead of relying only on readings affected by cable loss. Temperature sensing also helps the charging profile respond to real battery conditions, including temperature compensation for lead batteries and cold-temperature charging protection logic for lithium systems where supported by the charger setup.
The unit operates from 8V to 60V, covering common 12V, 24V and 48V battery banks. Its housing measures 14 x 38 x 38 mm, with 45 cm battery leads, M10 eyelets, a T1A 250V inline fuse and an operating temperature range from -10°C to +60°C.
Key features
- Wireless battery voltage and temperature sensing for compatible Victron MPPT solar chargers.
- Long range Bluetooth Smart communication through VE.Smart Network, with range up to 10 m.
- Works with 12V, 24V and 48V battery banks within its 8V to 60V operating voltage range.
- Battery-terminal voltage sensing helps reduce charging errors caused by voltage drop in cabling.
- Temperature data helps the charger adjust charging behavior based on real battery conditions.
- 45 cm leads with pre-crimped M10 eyelets make the battery connection straightforward.
- Self-adhesive backing lets the sensor mount directly on the battery body for a tidy installation.
- Low current draw keeps the sensor suitable for onboard battery systems that may sit unattended between trips.
Installation and setup
Installation is simple: connect the two eyelets to the battery terminals and mount the sensor on the battery body using the adhesive backing. On a multi-battery bank, the sensor may be connected to one individual battery, with the charger then using the shared voltage and temperature data through the VE.Smart Network.
Configuration is handled in the VictronConnect app. After pairing, the Smart Battery Sense can share voltage and temperature readings with one or more compatible Victron solar chargers on the same battery bank, reducing the need to run a separate sense cable between the battery compartment and the charger location.
Compatibility and system use
This sensor is a good match for marine solar installations using compatible Victron MPPT chargers, especially on cruising boats, fishing boats and service vessels where the battery bank may be several compartments away from the solar charge controller. It is most useful when the charger needs a battery-mounted voltage and temperature reference for cleaner charging behavior.
Before adding it to an existing Victron system, check whether another device is already providing battery voltage and temperature data. Systems already controlled by a Color Control GX or Venus GX, or installations using a BMV-712 with a temperature sensor, may not need a separate Smart Battery Sense.
Maintenance and care
For marine use, mount the unit where the battery area is protected from standing water, loose gear and accidental cable strain. During routine battery checks, confirm that the eyelets remain tight, the inline fuse holder is secure, and the adhesive mount has not loosened from vibration or heat.
