Description

Overview

The B&G RAM-T1-12V is a Type 1 hydraulic autopilot ram for 12 V DC onboard systems, used as the drive unit that physically moves the steering when the autopilot is engaged.

It uses an integrated hydraulic package so you are not piecing together separate hydraulic components in the installation space, which helps keep the layout simpler and reduces extra plumbing points that can leak over time.

On compatible systems, it can support Power Steer mode so the drive can be used to assist with steering control if the primary manual steering path is compromised.

Key features
  • Type 1 hydraulic ram drive unit for autopilot steering systems
  • 12 V DC operation for common onboard electrical setups
  • Integrated hydraulic design to reduce separate components in the steering gear area
  • Power Steer mode support on compatible installations for added steering redundancy
  • Compact form factor that fits more easily into tight aft lockers and steering compartments
Compatibility and fit

This ram is meant for boats with hydraulic steering where the autopilot drive is a hydraulic actuator. Type 1 sizing is typically chosen to match the steering load and the amount of movement required at the rudder or steering arm, so it is worth confirming the required drive size for your boat before ordering.

If you are pairing it with a B&G autopilot computer, confirm the computer is rated to drive a Type 1 hydraulic ram and that your steering geometry allows the ram to deliver the needed throw without binding through the full range of rudder travel.

Installation and setup

Plan the mounting location so the unit is supported by a solid structure and has room for full travel, hose routing, and future service access. Keep it out of bilge water and away from places that routinely flood, and allow clearance to inspect fittings and fasteners after sea trials.

Hydraulic steering work usually involves proper bleeding and leak checks. After installation, cycle the steering and autopilot drive through its range while watching for air in the system and rechecking all connections under load.

Electrical and system integration

This is a 12 V drive, so it should be wired to a 12 V DC supply with appropriate conductor sizing and circuit protection for the run length and expected load. Route wiring away from high-heat sources and moving gear, and seal cable entries where they pass through bulkheads to limit corrosion.

Once connected to the autopilot computer, follow the normal commissioning steps so the pilot knows the steering direction, limits, and response settings for your boat.

Use cases on board

This ram is a good match for sailing vessels running a 12 V DC system that want a hydraulic autopilot actuator packaged as a single integrated drive unit. It fits well in setups where space is limited and where access for inspection matters, such as aft lockers and under-cockpit steering compartments.

Maintenance and care

Periodically check for hydraulic seepage, loose fasteners, and chafe on hoses or wiring. If the boat is laid up for the season, keep the steering compartment clean and dry, and recheck system bleeding and connection tightness after the first few outings back on the water.

Product warranty

Many products sold by Apollo Lighting include a manufacturer's warranty covering defects in materials or workmanship. Warranty terms vary by brand, product category, and model, so eligibility, coverage duration, exclusions, and available remedies are determined by the applicable manufacturer. We recommend reviewing the warranty information provided with your product before installation or use, especially for marine electronics, navigation equipment, lighting, electrical systems, pumps, safety equipment, and other specialized marine products.

If you need warranty service, the claim must follow the process established by the manufacturer, authorized service center, or designated warranty provider. You may be asked for proof of purchase, a serial number, product registration, photos, maintenance or installation records, or other documentation. Apollo Lighting does not determine or modify a manufacturer's warranty coverage or final claim decision, but we are happy to help provide purchase information and direct you to the appropriate manufacturer or warranty resource.

Keep your receipt, product documentation, serial number information, and original packaging when practical. Damage caused by normal wear, misuse, improper installation, insufficient maintenance, corrosion, impact, unauthorized modifications, electrical issues, or operation outside the manufacturer's specifications may not be covered. Warranty claims are separate from standard returns, so a product that has been installed, used, or exposed to marine conditions may no longer qualify for return while still remaining eligible for evaluation under the manufacturer's applicable warranty.
