A ribbon cable (also known as a multi-wire planar cable) is a flat-plane cable with several conducting parallel wires. It gets its name from its similarity to a ribbon. Although ribbon cables are all attached in the same way, the cables come in a wide range of diameters and shapes. Ribbon cables can be easily routed in tight locations or utilized in applications with limited space since they are flat and flexible. Ribbon cables can easily route in straight lines, but they do not allow for sideways flexing due to the ribbon profile of the wire. If a ribbon cable installation requires a direction change, changing the proper angle is as simple as folding the cable over on itself.
