Overview
The Raymarine Type 2 Hydraulic Linear Drive is a below-deck autopilot drive for mechanically steered vessels up to 22,000 kg (48,500 lb) displacement. It uses a reversing hydraulic pump, hydraulic ram, fluid reservoir and hydraulic lines to move the rudder through an independent tiller arm or rudder quadrant.
This is the Type 2 drive size in the Raymarine hydraulic linear drive range, with 675 kg (1,488 lb) peak thrust, a 254 mm (10 in) maximum stroke and a hardover to hardover time of 10 seconds at nominal voltage with no load. The range is available in 12V and 24V versions, so the drive can be matched to the vessel's DC electrical system.
It is a good fit for larger sailboats and other mechanically steered vessels where the autopilot drive can be mounted below deck on a solid structure. Raymarine Evolution autopilot installations using this drive require an ACU-400 actuator control unit.
Key features
- For mechanically steered boats up to 22,000 kg (48,500 lb) displacement.
- Type 2 drive rating with 675 kg (1,488 lb) peak thrust and 254 mm (10 in) maximum stroke.
- Available in 12V and 24V DC configurations for matching the boat's electrical system.
- Works with Raymarine Evolution autopilot systems through an ACU-400 actuator control unit.
- Below-deck ram installation connects to an independent tiller arm or rudder quadrant.
- Conforms to EN60945:2002 for EMC and EN28846:1993 for ignition protection.
- Uses mineral based hydraulic oil from ISO VG10 to ISO VG40.
Variants
This range is offered in two voltage configurations so the drive can match the boat's DC electrical system.
The drive type, displacement rating, stroke, thrust rating, mounting approach and ACU-400 integration remain the same across both variants; the supplied motor voltage is the key difference.
- E12207: Voltage 12V. This version is for boats built around a 12V DC autopilot drive circuit.
- E12208: Voltage 24V. This version is for vessels with a 24V DC autopilot drive circuit.
Compatibility and fit
This drive is for mechanical steering systems, not hydraulic steering systems. It is most relevant where the steering gear is accessible below deck and there is room to mount the ram, pump and reservoir correctly.
The ram attaches to the rudder stock through an independent tiller arm or to a rudder quadrant. Some installations may need accessory fittings from the steering system maker to complete the connection properly.
Installation and setup
The hydraulic ram must be mounted on a very solid part of the vessel structure and aligned correctly with the tiller arm or rudder quadrant. The Type 2 ram can be mounted horizontally or vertically, which helps when working around lockers, berths, steering gear and other below-deck equipment.
Allow at least 17 cm (6.7 in) of clearance at the rear of the ram for the hydraulic pipes, and keep the pipe bend radius at 7.6 cm (3 in) or more. Plan the reservoir location so it remains accessible for top-ups and refills.
