Overview
The Blue Sea Systems DeckHand Dimmer is a DC lighting dimmer for non-regulated LED, incandescent, and halogen lamps on boats, available in 12V and 24V versions with 6A, 12A, or 25A maximum amperage ratings depending on the selected model.
It gives smooth control from 0 to 100% of input voltage, so cockpit, cabin, helm, deck, or accent lighting can be adjusted without relying on a simple on-off switch. The last brightness setting is stored in memory, which is useful when lights are used the same way each night.
The dimmer includes an illuminated exit function with adjustable time delay, helping keep a small amount of light available after shutdown while moving through the boat. Its offset mounting tabs allow multiple dimmers to sit close together when several lighting zones are grouped on a panel.
Key features
- Works with non-regulated LED, incandescent, and halogen lighting loads.
- Continuous voltage control from 0 to 100% of input voltage for fine brightness adjustment.
- Memory function returns the lights to the last dimming level after use.
- Illuminated exit setting includes an adjustable time delay for safer movement after lights are turned off.
- Offset mounting tabs help keep multiple dimmers close together in a neat control layout.
- Operating temperature range of -40 C to 85 C supports use in demanding onboard locations.
- Maximum parasitic current is 2mA, which helps limit standby draw on the DC system.
Variants
The DeckHand Dimmer is offered in several electrical configurations so the dimmer can be matched to the boat lighting circuit rather than oversizing or undersizing the control.
The options vary by nominal DC voltage and maximum amperage rating. The core dimming functions remain consistent across the range, including memory, illuminated exit with adjustable time delay, 0 to 100% voltage control, and compatibility with non-regulated LED, incandescent, and halogen lights.
- 7508: 25A, 12V. This version suits a 12V lighting circuit with a higher total connected load than the lower-amperage models.
- 7506: 6A, 12V. This version fits smaller 12V lighting zones where the connected lamps stay within a 6A limit.
- 7509: 12A, 24V. This version is for 24V systems that need mid-range dimming capacity for one lighting zone.
- 7504: 6A, 24V. This version fits smaller 24V lighting circuits with a connected load up to 6A.
- 7507: 12A, 12V. This version is used on 12V lighting circuits that need more capacity than the 6A model without moving to the 25A configuration.
Electrical and system integration
Match the selected dimmer to the vessel voltage and the total current draw of the lights on the circuit. The dimmer controls the load by varying output voltage, so it is intended for non-regulated LED lamps, incandescent lamps, and halogen lamps rather than lighting products that require their own regulated driver behavior.
For refits, it is a practical option when replacing a basic light switch with dimming control, especially where a helm, cabin, cockpit, or deck area needs less glare at night. For new panel layouts, the close-mounting tab arrangement helps keep related lighting zones grouped without wasting panel space.
Installation and setup
The included momentary (ON)-OFF-(ON) switch is used for dimmer control. The up and down momentary positions handle brightness changes, while the off position shuts the lighting circuit down.
Before installation, confirm the circuit voltage, load amperage, wire sizing, fuse protection, and mounting location. On boats exposed to vibration and moisture, careful terminal work and strain relief matter as much as the dimmer rating itself.
Use cases on board
This dimmer fits boats where lighting needs change between day work, night running, anchoring, and cabin use. It is especially useful for helm lighting that must be reduced at night, cockpit courtesy lighting, cabin task lighting, and grouped lighting zones that benefit from repeatable brightness settings.
