Overview
The Jabsco 17850 & 17860 Series is a range of 12V DC oil change systems for removing engine oil through the dipstick tube using a self-contained pump and container. Each system uses a 12V DC motor with an integral power switch, draws 2A, and is protected by a 5A fuse, making it a practical fit for boats with a standard 12V battery system.
Both configurations use a 3.5 gal (13.2 L) maximum-capacity container, 6 ft (1.8 m) battery leads with alligator clips, and an 8 ft (2.4 m) suction tube that is resistant to oil and heat. The pump body is polypropylene, with a Santoprene diaphragm and Viton valves for engine-oil service.
This type of oil changer is useful where draining into a pan is awkward, such as in compact engine rooms, sailboat compartments, fishing boats, and cruisers with limited access below the engine. It keeps the oil change process contained and lets the user move the waste oil away for proper recycling after service.
Key features
- 12V DC operation with integral power switch, 2A amp draw, and 5A fuse requirement for connection to a boat battery.
- Extracts oil through the dipstick tube using a 1/4 in (6 mm) probe, which helps in engine spaces where bottom-drain access is limited.
- 3.5 gal (13.2 L) maximum container capacity across both bucket and flat tank configurations.
- Includes 6 ft (1.8 m) battery leads with alligator clips and an 8 ft (2.4 m) suction tube for reach around typical onboard engine installations.
- Polypropylene pump body, Santoprene diaphragm, and Viton valves support use with engine oil.
- The 17850 bucket version weighs 6 lb (2.7 kg) empty, while the 17860 flat tank version weighs 7 lb (3.17 kg).
Variants
The series is offered in two configurations that use the same basic 12V oil extraction concept but differ in system type and container layout.
Both variants share the 12V DC motor, 2A draw, 5A fuse size, 3.5 gal (13.2 L) container capacity, 6 ft (1.8 m) battery leads, 8 ft (2.4 m) suction tube, polypropylene pump body, Santoprene diaphragm, and Viton valves. The main difference is the receiver style, with one version using an upright bucket and the other using a flat tank.
- 17850-1012: Engine Oil Change System with bucket container. The upright bucket layout gives a straightforward receiver shape for onboard engine service and has an empty weight of 6 lb (2.7 kg).
- 17860-2012: Flat Tank Oil Changer System with flat tank container. The lower-profile tank format helps when storage space is tight and has an empty weight of 7 lb (3.17 kg).
Installation and use
The system is powered by connecting the alligator clips to a 12V DC battery with the pump switch in the off position. In use, the engine oil is warmed first, the container is vented, and the suction probe is inserted through the dipstick tube until it reaches the oil pan. A typical 5 quart (5 liter) engine takes around 10 minutes to drain once the pump is running and the oil is warm.
The pump is intended for engine oil removal, not for gasoline, solvents, thinners, or other flammable liquids with a flash point below 100°F (37.8°C). It is also important to keep the battery area ventilated and to switch the pump off before connecting or removing the battery clips.
Compatibility and onboard fit
This range is for 12V DC systems. It is a good match for boat owners and service technicians who handle routine oil changes on auxiliary engines, generators, or inboard engine spaces where gravity draining is messy or difficult.
The bucket version fits service setups where an upright container is easy to handle. The flat tank version works well where the container needs to be stored in a lower compartment or moved around tighter lockers after the oil change is complete.
Maintenance and care
After use, the container should be emptied into a proper waste-oil container for recycling. For longer storage periods, the pump can be flushed with a water-based degreaser solution so the oil path is not left loaded with old oil residue.
