Overview
The Victron Energy ARG140301020R is an Argodiode 140-3AC battery isolator for charging three separate battery banks from one alternator without tying those banks together. It is rated for a maximum charge current of 140 A, works with 12V and 24V battery systems, and uses Schottky diodes to keep voltage drop low for this type of charging setup.
On a boat, this unit is a practical fit where the alternator needs to feed a starter battery, house bank, and an additional service or accessory battery while keeping discharge isolated between them. Draining the house or accessory bank will not also pull down the starter battery through the isolator, which is the main reason this layout is common on cruising boats, fishing boats, and workboats with multiple battery banks.
The 140-3AC version supports three batteries, uses M8 studs for the main cable connections, and has a 6.3 mm Faston connection for the compensation diode and energize circuit. The housing measures 60 x 120 x 150 mm and weighs about 1.1 kg, so it can be planned into a protected electrical compartment without taking up much space.
Key features
- Charges up to three battery banks from a single alternator while keeping the banks electrically separated.
- 140 A maximum charge current and 140 A maximum alternator current for larger onboard charging systems.
- Suitable for both 12V and 24V battery systems, which helps with fit across many marine electrical layouts.
- Schottky diode construction keeps voltage drop to approximately 0.3 V at low current and approximately 0.45 V at rated output.
- Current limited alternator energize input helps alternators that need voltage on the B+ output before they begin charging.
- M8 main studs suit higher current battery cabling, with 6.3 mm Faston terminals for compensation and energize connections.
- Compact 60 x 120 x 150 mm footprint makes placement easier in battery lockers, engine spaces, or protected DC electrical areas.
Installation and setup
This isolator belongs in the charging circuit between the alternator and the battery banks. Cable size, terminal hardware, routing, and overcurrent protection need to match the alternator output and the boat installation, especially where long cable runs, vibration, and heat are part of the layout.
Because any diode isolator introduces some voltage drop, charging voltage should be checked after installation. The compensation diode connection can be used to help offset that drop at the alternator, which matters when the goal is to charge the batteries properly rather than only split the alternator output.
Electrical and battery bank use
The 140-3AC is useful when a boat has more than one battery role and those roles should remain separated during use. A common arrangement is one starting battery, one house bank, and one extra bank for equipment, electronics, or a second engine-related load, with the alternator feeding all three while the isolator prevents one bank from backfeeding another.
The alternator energize input is especially relevant on installations where the alternator will not start charging unless it sees DC voltage on B+. In that case, the energize circuit supplies the required signal when the engine run or stop switch is closed.
Maintenance and care
Install the unit where it stays protected from direct spray, bilge water, and accidental contact with loose gear. Periodic checks should focus on clean terminals, tight cable connections, strain relief, and signs of heat at the studs or cable lugs, since high current charging systems depend on low resistance connections.
