Overview
The Hella Marine 016145-011 is an Apelo A1 surface-mount underwater light with selectable white or blue output for 12V or 24V boats (9-32V DC input).
In white mode it produces 1800 lumens at 5000K while drawing 20W. The light is pre-wired with a 2.5 m tinned marine cable, and the body is sealed to IP68/IP69 for underwater use and pressure-wash cleaning.
This is the white-lens version, built with a corrosion-proof thermal polymer base and a UV-stable Grilamid nylon lens. The face measures 95 mm (3 3/4 in) across for a clean transom install on hulls of any material.
Key features
- Selectable white or blue output, including steady and strobe modes
- White output: 1800 lumens at 5000K
- Multivolt 9-32V DC input (12V/24V nominal)
- White/blue draw: 20W (about 1.7A @ 12V, 0.9A @ 24V)
- IP68/IP69 sealing for continuous submersion and high-pressure water jet cleaning
- Pre-wired with 2.5 m tinned marine cable
- Thermal polymer base with Grilamid impact-resistant nylon lens
- Reverse polarity and spike protection for harsh onboard electrical conditions
- 95 mm (3 3/4 in) diameter surface-mount footprint
Installation and setup
Apelo A1 is a transom surface-mount light. Plan the placement so the beam sits below the waterline when the boat is at rest, with clearance from trim tabs, transducers, and trailer bunks.
Before drilling, confirm you have a dry route inside the hull for the cable and a clean surface for bedding and sealing. A good seal on every fastener matters on a stern that sees constant spray and vibration.
Electrical and system integration
The light runs on 9-32V DC (12/24V nominal). With a 20W load, wire sizing and overcurrent protection should match the run length and expected voltage drop, especially on longer transom-to-panel routes.
The electronics are spike protected to +500V and reverse polarity protected to -700V. A standard switched feed can be used to change between white, blue, and strobe modes by toggling power.
For installs close to radios and navigation gear, it carries EMC-related approvals including EN55015/CISPR 15, IEC60533, IEC61547, and ICES-5.
Use on board
This setup fits anglers who want blue light around the stern at night, and cruisers who want bright white for swimming, boarding, and checking the waterline. The 5000K white reads clean on gelcoat and helps with visibility when dock lighting is low.
Maintenance and care
Keep the lens clear for the best output. Rinse after saltwater use and wipe with mild soap and water. Avoid abrasive pads that can haze the lens over time.
If the boat stays in the water for long stretches, plan on periodic cleaning to remove growth. Any coating applied over the lens should be compatible with underwater lighting and should not interfere with sealing surfaces.
