Overview
The B&G HALO20 is a 20-inch radar dome that uses solid-state X-band pulse compression and connects over Ethernet to compatible multifunction displays. It is offered as HALO20 and HALO20+ models, with a maximum range of 24 NM or 36 NM depending on the version.
Both versions run on 12 V or 24 V DC systems (10.5 to 31.2 V input) with a recommended 5 A fuse, and operating draw is range and mode dependent (about 17 to 29 W). The dome is rated IPX6 for heavy spray and washdowns, and it is built to IEC 60945 marine electronics environmental standards for temperature, humidity, and marine vibration.
InstantOn startup means the radar can be brought online in seconds instead of waiting for a warm-up cycle. The HALO20+ version supports rotation speeds up to 60 rpm at close range (mode and display dependent) and adds VelocityTrack Doppler to make moving targets easier to read at a glance.
Key features
- 20-inch dome form factor with a low profile that suits mast, arch, hardtop, and t-top installations
- Ethernet 100Base-T networking for connection to a display or through an Ethernet switch
- 12/24 V DC input (10.5 to 31.2 V) with reverse polarity protection and a recommended 5 A fuse
- Solid-state transmitter with InstantOn operation and no magnetron warm-up cycle
- IPX6 waterproof rating and IEC 60945 environmental compliance for wet decks and offshore conditions
- Minimum range of 6 m for close-quarters work around docks, channels, and moorings
- Model-dependent performance: 24 NM max range on HALO20, 36 NM max range on HALO20+
Variants
This radar dome is available in two models that share the same 20-inch format, Ethernet networking, and 12/24 V power support.
The main differences are maximum range, transmitter peak power output, and supported rotation speeds. HALO20+ also includes VelocityTrack Doppler and a blue accent light in the base.
- 000-14539-001: Model HALO20+. Maximum range 36 NM, transmitter peak power output 25 W, and rotation speeds up to 60 rpm (mode and display dependent). VelocityTrack Doppler adds color cues that help separate approaching and departing targets.
- 000-14540-001: Model HALO20. Maximum range 24 NM, transmitter peak power output 10 W, and rotation speeds up to 24 rpm (mode and display dependent). This model keeps the same InstantOn behavior and 6 m minimum range for tight maneuvering areas.
What’s included
- 20-inch radar dome scanner
- 20 m interconnection cable
- Ethernet adapter cable
Compatibility and fit
The scanner communicates over Ethernet, so it can be connected directly to a compatible display or routed through an onboard Ethernet switch when you are networking multiple devices. Interconnection cable lengths are available up to 30 m, which helps when the radar is mounted on an arch, hardtop, or mast and the display is down at the helm.
Older multifunction displays may not support this radar family, so it is worth confirming display support and software level before installation if you are upgrading an existing system.
Installation and setup
Plan the mounting location with radar line of sight in mind, and allow room around the base for cable routing and service access. For Halo20 and Halo20+ domes, allow at least 255 mm clearance from the center of the unit to nearby objects, and mount on a surface between 3 mm and 18 mm thick.
Use the mounting template, keep the scanner aligned with the vessel’s keel line, and elevate the dome when mounting on a large metal hardtop so the radar beam clears the roof edge. Avoid placing the dome near hot exhaust outlets, deck lighting, or other antennas where heat, soot, or RF interference can affect performance.
Electrical and network integration
Power the unit from the boat’s DC distribution using a fuse or breaker close to the source, and keep connections dry and strain relieved to handle vibration. Typical standby draw is about 3.9 W at 13.8 V, which helps when you want the radar ready without running it continuously.
On-board use
For coastal cruising, harbor approaches, and running in rain or fog, this dome radar helps confirm what is around you beyond visual range, while still giving useful detail close to the boat. The HALO20+ variant is a strong match for crews that want faster close-range updates and Doppler target coloring for busy waterways.
Maintenance and care
Rinse salt off the dome with fresh water and wipe it down with a mild cleaner when needed. Avoid solvents such as gasoline, acetone, or MEK, which can damage the dome surface.
