Overview
The Victron Energy ORI242417040 is an Orion XS 1400 DC-DC battery charger for controlled battery-to-battery charging and DC power supply use in 12V, 24V, or mixed-voltage electrical systems. It accepts a 9-35V input range, has an adjustable 10-35V output range, and can deliver up to 1400W of continuous output at 40°C.
This unit is a strong fit for boats with separate starter and house battery banks, especially where alternator output, long cable runs, or different system voltages make direct charging less predictable. Input and output current can be adjusted from 1-50A, so the charger can be matched to the alternator, wiring, and battery bank instead of forcing a fixed charge profile.
The fanless housing helps keep noise and moving parts out of the installation, while the IP65 rating gives protection against dust and heavy rain. Configuration and monitoring are handled through VictronConnect, with Bluetooth Smart built in and VE.Direct available for integration with compatible Victron GX systems.
Key features
- 1400W continuous output at 40°C for charging larger service banks from an alternator-fed DC system.
- Wide 9-35V input and 10-35V adjustable output ranges for 12V, 24V, and mixed-voltage installations.
- Current setting range of 1-50A lets the installer limit alternator load and match the charger to the boat’s wiring and battery bank.
- Works as a DC-DC battery charger or as a power supply with output voltage set through VictronConnect.
- Built-in Bluetooth Smart supports setup, monitoring, firmware updates, warnings, and alarms through the VictronConnect app.
- VE.Direct port supports wired connection to compatible Victron GX devices for monitoring, diagnostics, DVCC, and VRM access when the wider system is configured for it.
- Adaptive four-stage charging supports lithium and common lead-acid battery types, with preset and customizable charge settings.
- Engine shutdown detection helps the charger draw from the alternator when the engine is running, reducing the risk of draining the starter battery at rest.
- Remote on/off input can be wired to a switch or compatible BMS control signal.
- IP65 housing is dust-tight and protected against heavy rain, which suits protected marine electrical spaces that may see damp air or splash exposure.
- Fanless operation reduces noise and removes a common wear point in engine room, locker, or equipment-bay installations.
- Screw terminals accept cable up to 4 AWG, with compact dimensions of 138.1 x 124.4 x 53 mm for tight mounting spaces.
Installation and setup
Mount this charger in a protected, ventilated location where cable runs can be kept practical and service access remains possible. The IP65 rating helps with damp marine environments, but it should still be installed away from standing water, direct bilge exposure, oil mist, and high heat sources.
For alternator charging, the adjustable input current is one of the most important setup points. It lets the installer reduce load on the alternator and tune the charge behavior to the actual electrical system on board, rather than relying on a one-size setting.
Electrical and system integration
The Orion XS 1400 can handle 12V to 12V, 24V to 24V, 12V to 24V, and 24V to 12V use cases within its voltage limits, which makes it useful on boats with mixed DC architecture or dedicated electronics supply requirements. It can also be paralleled with additional Orion XS units when a system needs more charging current.
Bluetooth setup through VictronConnect is useful during commissioning because charge voltage, current limits, battery presets, remote on/off behavior, and related settings can be checked without opening a panel once the unit is accessible by app. In larger Victron installations, the VE.Direct connection can tie the charger into a GX device for central monitoring and control.
Use cases on board
This charger suits cruising boats, fishing boats, workboats, and refit projects where the house battery needs controlled charging from the engine alternator. It is also practical when lithium batteries are added to a vessel that still needs alternator protection, low-temperature lithium shutdown, and configurable charge behavior.
For boats with sensitive DC electronics or a mixed 12V and 24V layout, it can also serve as a stable DC power supply within its rated voltage and power limits.
Maintenance and care
The unit does not require regular maintenance, but the installation should be kept clean and dry. Check terminals and cabling during routine electrical inspections, especially on boats that see vibration, salt air, or seasonal layup.
