Overview

The Hella Marine 8504 Series is a combined masthead navigation lamp and deck floodlight for vessels under 20 m (65 ft), with a 3 nautical mile masthead light built into the same housing as a forward-facing work light for the deck and superstructure. It uses halogen lamps, with a 12V / 10W BAY15d bulb for the masthead light and a 12V / 55W H3 bulb for the deck floodlight, and it is rated IP X4 for splash exposure.

Mounting is set up for a mast installation where the housing arms flex around the mast profile, and the masthead lamp and deck floodlight are wired separately so they can be switched independently. The housing is plastic that resists UV and impacts, the lens is glass bonded to the reflector to help keep out dust and moisture, and the metal parts are stainless steel.

Variants

This light is offered in multiple configurations based on housing color.

Housing color varies by part number. The lighting functions, bulb types, mounting approach, and separate masthead and floodlight wiring remain consistent across the range.

• 998504001: Housing color Black housing. A darker housing tends to visually blend with many spars, spreaders, and rigging setups.
• 998504011: Housing color White housing. A lighter housing typically matches white or light-painted masts and helps keep a uniform look aloft.

Compatibility and fit

This is a mast-mounted combination light for boats that need a COLREG-style masthead light with a separate deck floodlight in the same fixture. It is intended for vessels under 20 m, and the masthead lamp meets a 3 nautical mile visibility rating. Make sure you have enough clearance for the body and wiring at the mounting point, especially if you have a spinnaker pole track, radar mount, or other hardware nearby.

Installation and wiring

Plan for two switched positive feeds so the masthead lamp and deck floodlight can be controlled separately, plus the appropriate return wiring. Route cables with strain relief and a drip loop at the entry point, and seal any penetrations to suit your mast and exposure. Aim the floodlight so it lights the working area without throwing glare back toward the helm.

Regulatory notes

The unit carries approvals including BSH, IMO COLREG, USCG, ABYC A-16, NMSC, and Maritime NZ. Always confirm your vessel lighting arrangement and mounting position meet the rules that apply to your boat and operating area.

Maintenance and bulb replacement

Halogen lamps run hot, so allow the light to cool before servicing. Replace with the correct bulb types: BAY15d 12V / 10W for the masthead lamp and H3 12V / 55W for the deck floodlight. Keep the lens and sealing surfaces clean and check that fasteners stay tight after the first few runs, especially if the mast sees heavy vibration.
