Overview
The Blue Sea Systems 8242 is a shunt shifter that lets a DC digital ammeter read a positive-side shunt circuit when it is paired with the Blue Sea Systems 8255 Digital Meter Shunt. It is used on 12 to 36V DC systems and creates a ground-referenced signal that mirrors the 8255 shunt's 500A/50mV output.
That matters on boats where alternator output or another charging circuit is measured on the positive side, while the digital meter expects the shunt reference on the negative side. The 8242 handles that conversion without moving the main shunt, which helps when the existing cable run is already laid out and hard to change.
Key features
- Built for positive-side shunt applications such as alternator output measurement
- Made to work with the Blue Sea Systems 8255 Digital Meter Shunt
- Converts the shunt reference from positive to negative for digital meter use
- Creates a ground-referenced signal that matches the shunt's millivolt output
- Mounts directly to the shunt using the existing sense screws
- Suitable for 12 to 36V DC electrical systems
- Includes the hardware needed for installation
Compatibility and fit
This adapter is intended for installations built around the Blue Sea Systems 8255 shunt and a digital ammeter that needs a negative-referenced shunt signal. It belongs in the meter and shunt signal path, so it does not replace the shunt or the meter itself.
It is a practical fit for charging-system layouts where the shunt is already on the positive side of the circuit. That is common when monitoring alternator output and similar DC current paths on cruising boats, fishing boats, and other vessels with dedicated battery charging instrumentation.
Installation and setup
The adapter fastens directly onto the shunt with the existing sense screws, which keeps the installation compact and avoids extra mounting steps. In refits and service work, that makes it easier to add digital current monitoring without disturbing the heavy cable connections around the charging circuit.
For the cleanest result, install it close to the shunt in a protected electrical area where the meter wiring can be kept tidy and easy to trace later. That approach also makes future troubleshooting simpler if you are checking alternator output or charging performance.
Use on board
This part suits boats that need a digital ammeter reading from a positive-side shunt circuit without relocating the shunt. It makes the most sense in panel upgrades and charging-system updates where the electrical layout is already fixed and the goal is to add clear current monitoring with minimal disruption.
