Overview
The Hella Marine Sea Hawk-470 is a pencil beam light bar with an integrated edge light for long-range forward lighting on boats. The main beam is rated at 113,000 candela with a 1 lux reach of 330 m and an 8° x 4° beam angle, which helps when you want to pick out markers, channel edges, or floating debris on night runs.
It runs on 12V or 24V DC and draws up to 36W on the pencil beam (2.7A at 12V, 1.4A at 24V). The edge light is a separate low-power function at 4W (300mA at 12V, 150mA at 24V) that gives a soft outline around the bar for ambient light and visibility at the dock.
The housing is sealed to IP 6K7 and IP 6K9K for dust protection and washdown use, and it includes reverse polarity and transient spike protection. A 2.5 m tinned multi-core cable is fitted for marine wiring runs, and the mounting bracket is polished 316 stainless steel.
Key features
- Pencil beam optics with 113,000 candela output, 1 lux at 330 m, and an 8° x 4° beam angle for long-range forward light
- Multivolt 12V/24V DC operation for common house systems
- Power draw: 36W on the pencil beam, plus a 4W integrated edge light function
- IP 6K7 and IP 6K9K sealing for dust protection, temporary immersion resistance, and high-pressure washdowns
- 2.5 m tinned multi-core cable for marine installs where corrosion control matters
- Heavy duty Grilamid lens that stays clear over time and handles impact and UV exposure
- Thermally conductive polymer housing that pulls heat away from the electronics during extended use
- Reverse polarity and transient spike protection for real-world boat electrical systems
- Polished 316 stainless steel bracket with an adjustable mount that supports upright or pendant orientation
- Compliance markings: CE, ECE R10, RCM, UKCA
Variants
This light bar is offered in multiple configurations that change the housing color and the edge light color.
The pencil beam output and electrical ratings stay the same across the range; the differences are the exterior finish (black or white housing) and the edge light color (blue or white).
- 958140531: White housing; blue edge light. White housing blends into light gelcoat, and the blue edge light gives a cool glow around the bar when the edge function is on.
- 958140511: White housing; white edge light. White housing keeps a clean look on many topsides, and the white edge light reads as a neutral accent at night.
- 958140521: Black housing; blue edge light. Black housing visually disappears on many hardtops and arches, and the blue edge light adds a distinct outline without changing the main beam.
- 958140501: Black housing; white edge light. Black housing pairs well with dark hardware, and the white edge light gives a subtle outline that is easy on the eyes at the dock.
Installation and setup
Plan the mounting location so the beam can be aimed forward without reflecting off rails, bow pulpits, or the deck. The adjustable bracket allows upright or pendant mounting, which helps when you are fitting to a hardtop, radar arch, cabin brow, or a forward-facing mast crossbar.
Route the 2.5 m tinned cable to a dry junction point and support it along the run to reduce vibration fatigue. Aim the light carefully and lock down the bracket once the beam is centered where you need it.
Electrical and system integration
On 12V systems the pencil beam draw is 2.7A (36W), and on 24V systems it is 1.4A (36W). The edge light is a low-power 4W load, which can be useful when you want a gentle outline without running the full beam.
Even with built-in reverse polarity and transient spike protection, use marine-grade conductors, clean terminations, and appropriate circuit protection sized for the load and the run length.
Materials and durability
The lens uses heavy duty Grilamid, a material that holds up to impact, UV exposure, and common wash chemicals while staying clear. The housing is a thermally conductive polymer that helps manage heat during extended use, and the 316 stainless steel bracket is suited to saltwater hardware.
Use on board
This light bar is a good match for skippers who want a tight forward beam for higher-speed night transits, approaching an unlit dock, or scanning for buoys and floating gear offshore. The edge light function can also add low-level ambient light around the mounting area for dockside movement without throwing a long-range beam.
Maintenance and care
Rinse salt and grime off the lens and bracket after trips, especially if the boat sees heavy spray or frequent washdowns. Check bracket fasteners periodically for tightness, and keep the lens free of abrasive cleaners so the beam pattern stays crisp.
