Overview
The Victron Energy SmartSolar Charge Controller MPPT 250/70 up to 250/100 VE.Can is a high-capacity MPPT solar charge controller range for larger onboard solar arrays feeding 12 V, 24 V, or 48 V battery banks, with 36 V setup available manually. The range supports up to 250 V PV open-circuit voltage in cold conditions and is available in 70 A, 85 A, and 100 A charge-current versions.
This SmartSolar VE.Can range is a practical fit for cruising boats, workboats, and off-grid marine electrical systems where multiple solar strings, lithium or lead-acid batteries, and networked monitoring may be part of the same installation. VE.Can, VE.Direct, and built-in Bluetooth give the installer several ways to configure, monitor, and integrate the controller with Victron GX devices and VictronConnect.
The controller uses multi-stage adaptive charging with preset or user-defined charge algorithms, and it can coordinate charging with other SmartSolar controllers. That matters on boats with split solar areas across hardtops, arches, davits, or cabin tops, where shading can change through the day.
Key features
- MPPT solar charge control for 12 V, 24 V, and 48 V battery banks, with automatic voltage selection and manual 36 V setup.
- 250 V maximum PV open-circuit voltage, with a 245 V start-up and operating maximum.
- Available in 70 A, 85 A, and 100 A charge-current configurations to match different solar array and battery-bank sizes.
- VE.Can, VE.Direct, and built-in Bluetooth for setup, monitoring, firmware updates, and integration with Victron system components.
- VE.Can synchronized operation supports up to 25 controllers, useful when larger boats use more than one solar controller.
- Bluetooth synchronized operation supports up to 10 controllers when a wired VE.Can link is not the preferred layout.
- Multi-stage adaptive charging with eight pre-programmed algorithms or a user-defined charge profile.
- Protection against PV reverse polarity, output short circuit, and over-temperature conditions.
- Remote on/off input and programmable relay for integration with BMS control, alarms, or other onboard system logic.
- IP43 protection for electronic components and IP22 protection at the connection area, with an operating temperature range of -30 °C to +60 °C.
Variants
This product range is offered in different charge-current and PV-connection configurations. The charge-current rating changes the maximum charging output, while the PV connection changes how the solar array wiring lands at the controller.
The Tr versions use terminal connections for PV wiring, while the MC4 versions use MC4 connector pairs. Across the range, the controllers share the same SmartSolar VE.Can platform, Bluetooth access, VE.Direct communication, adaptive charging logic, and 250 V PV input class.
- SCC125070421: PV connection Tr, rated charge current 70 A. The terminal PV connection suits installations where array wiring is landed directly into the controller enclosure rather than using plug-in MC4 leads.
- SCC125070521: PV connection MC4, rated charge current 70 A. The MC4 connection format works well where the solar array wiring already uses MC4-style connectors and a cleaner plug-in PV connection is preferred.
- SCC125085411: PV connection Tr, rated charge current 85 A. The 85 A output gives more charging headroom than the 70 A models while keeping terminal-style PV wiring.
- SCC125085511: PV connection MC4, rated charge current 85 A. This version pairs the 85 A charge rating with MC4 PV inputs for installations using connectorized solar string wiring.
- SCC125110512: PV connection MC4, rated charge current 100 A. This is the highest charge-current option listed in this range and uses MC4 PV connections for larger solar installations within the controller limits.
Installation and setup
Mount the controller in a dry, ventilated electrical space where the connection area is protected from spray and where heat can move away from the enclosure. The protection rating is not intended for exposed deck or cockpit mounting, so engine-room bulkheads, electrical lockers, and protected technical compartments are the more typical marine locations.
The battery terminals accept up to 35 mm² or AWG2 cable, which is important on higher-current 70 A to 100 A charging circuits. Cable size, overcurrent protection, disconnects, and routing should be matched to the vessel’s DC standards, battery chemistry, and expected charging current.
Electrical and system integration
For a networked Victron installation, VE.Can lets multiple controllers communicate with a GX device so each controller can be monitored individually while the system operates as one coordinated charging setup. VE.Direct is also available for wired data connection, and Bluetooth gives direct access from a phone or tablet for configuration and status checks.
The remote on/off input can be used with compatible BMS or system-control wiring, which is especially useful in lithium battery installations where charging sources may need to be enabled or disabled by the battery management system. The programmable relay can be used for alarm or control logic where the rest of the system supports it.
Use cases on board
This range makes sense for vessels carrying larger solar arrays, such as cruising catamarans, monohulls with hardtops or arches, sportfishing boats with house loads at anchor, and workboats that need solar charging tied into a monitored DC system. The MPPT tracking helps when panels see changing light from rigging, radar arches, antennas, sails, clouds, or dockside shading.
For owners already using Victron batteries, inverters, GX monitoring, or the VictronConnect app, the SmartSolar VE.Can range fits naturally into the same electrical ecosystem without making everyday monitoring complicated.
