Overview

The i2Systems Apeiron A503 is a 3W LED downlight with spring clips for quick mounting in overhead panels on boats. It runs on 9-30V DC and throws a wide 120° beam, making it a straightforward fit on both 12V and 24V lighting circuits.

Output is about 150 lumens (typical) and the lens uses tempered glass with a diffuser, so the light looks smooth from normal viewing angles. The housing uses an anodized aluminum body with a stainless trim, and the fixture is sealed to IP67 for wet areas and washdowns.

Installation and setup

The spring-clip body seats into a 2.75 in (70 mm) cutout. Before cutting, confirm you have about 1.37 in (35 mm) of clearance behind the panel for the housing, plus space for a dry connection point where the leads can be terminated.

For basic on/off control, connect red to DC positive and black to DC negative. The yellow lead is used when dimming control is added; if you are not dimming, cap and secure it so it cannot short or wick moisture into the wiring space.

Electrical and system integration

Because input is 9-30V DC, the fixture can be used on typical onboard DC busses without a separate driver. When dimming is integrated, keep the control signal at or below 30V DC and route the control lead away from high-current runs to reduce noise in the dimming response.

Compatibility and fit

The IP67 seal handles spray and routine washdowns, but it should not be installed where it can sit in standing water or be submerged. This is especially important in low spots under coamings or near scuppers where water can pool.

Trim style affects the finished look and how well the light hides existing cutouts. Round trim blends into soft headliners, while the square options suit modern interiors and can help cover slight imperfections from a refit.

Use on board

Common placements include cabin overheads, pilothouse soffits, hardtops, arches, and cockpit seating areas where you want a wide pool of light without sharp hot spots. It is a good match for boats upgrading older downlights while staying on a simple switched circuit and keeping power draw low.

Maintenance and care

Rinse the trim and lens with fresh water after salt exposure and wipe with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners on polished finishes, and occasionally check that the spring clips remain secure and that sealing surfaces stay clean.
