Overview
The Blue Sea Systems ML-RBS is a magnetic latching remote battery switch for high-amperage DC battery circuits, with manual control at the switch and remote operation from a helm, electrical panel, or other protected control location. Across the range, it carries a 500A continuous rating, a 700A intermittent rating for 5 minutes, and uses a bi-stable coil that draws no operating current while the switch is staying ON or OFF.
This switch is built for battery isolation and load switching on larger marine electrical systems where long battery cable runs are better kept short. It can switch high current under load, includes a manual override knob with a LOCKED OFF service position, and uses 3/8"-16 tin-plated copper terminal studs with 7/8" stud length for large cable terminals.
The ML-RBS suits installations on cruising boats, fishing boats, workboats, and other vessels that need battery switching from a more convenient location without giving up direct manual control at the battery switch. Voltage and control connection options vary by configuration, so the selected variant should match the vessel control circuit and wiring method.
Key features
- 500A continuous rating for main battery switching on high-current DC systems.
- Bi-stable magnetic latching coil draws 0 mA while holding its ON or OFF state, which helps reduce unnecessary battery drain.
- Manual override knob allows local operation with or without control power and includes a LOCKED OFF position for service work.
- Remote control capability supports battery switching from the helm, electrical panel, or another convenient onboard location.
- 3/8"-16 tin-plated copper studs with 7/8" length accept large cable lugs and support multiple cable terminals where the installation allows.
- Silver alloy contacts support switching live loads, with a live current switching rating of 300A at 12V DC.
- Label recesses help identify the connected battery bank or circuit in a crowded DC distribution area.
- Designed to meet ratings with 2x 4/0 cable and #10 mounting hardware.
- Operating temperature range of -10°C to 60°C supports protected engine room and electrical compartment installations.
Variants
The ML-RBS range is offered in four configurations. The options change the nominal control voltage and the control circuit connection style, while the core switch function remains focused on remote battery isolation with manual override.
The 12V versions use a 9-16V DC control circuit, while the 24V versions use an 18-32V DC control circuit. Tinned wire versions suit conventional hard-wired installations, while Deutsch DTM / Amphenol ATM versions suit systems that use sealed connector interfaces for the control circuit.
- 7702: Nominal voltage 24V DC with tinned wire control circuit connection. This version fits 24V control systems where direct wire termination is preferred for the remote control circuit.
- 7700: Nominal voltage 12V DC with tinned wire control circuit connection. This version fits 12V control systems using a traditional hard-wired control circuit.
- 7700100: Nominal voltage 12V DC with Deutsch DTM / Amphenol ATM control circuit connection. This version fits 12V systems where a sealed connector style is needed for the control wiring.
- 7702100: Nominal voltage 24V DC with Deutsch DTM / Amphenol ATM control circuit connection. This version fits 24V systems that use a sealed connector interface for the control circuit.
Installation and setup
Mount the switch close to the battery bank or main DC distribution point so the highest-current cable runs stay as short and direct as practical. The remote control wiring can then be routed to a helm station, battery management panel, or protected switch location, depending on the vessel layout.
Use cable, terminals, torque, circuit protection, and routing practices that match the vessel’s DC system and current requirements. The terminal studs are sized for large conductors, and the listed terminal stud torque is 140 in-lb, so the installation should be handled with the same care as other primary battery connections.
Electrical and system integration
The switch is intended for DC battery control where a remote switch position is more practical than walking to the battery compartment each time the bank needs to be connected or isolated. The LED output can be used for remote state indication when an optional LED is installed, giving the operator a clear view of switch status from the control position.
Because the coil is magnetic latching, it only needs power while changing state. That makes it useful on boats where standby draw matters, especially on vessels that sit at anchor, at a mooring, or in storage between trips.
