Overview
The Hella Marine 2984 series is an incandescent stern navigation light for vertical surface mounting on the transom, with 2 nautical mile visibility and an IP55 rating.
It runs on a 12V DC system and uses a 25W BAY15d bulb. Wiring enters through the base plate and is protected by a rubber grommet, which helps keep the cable entry tidy and sealed at the stern.
The body is non-magnetic and built from plastic that resists UV and impact. The bulb hangs vertically and the electrical contacts sit in the upper area of the lamp, helping reduce corrosion in wet, spray-prone mounting spots.
Key features
- 2 nautical mile visibility for stern navigation lighting.
- 12V system light with a 25W BAY15d incandescent bulb.
- Vertical surface mount format suited to common transom installations.
- Snap-to-base housing arrangement that avoids screws through the lamp body.
- Cable entry through the base with a rubber grommet for a more secure pass-through.
- IP55 protection for exposure to spray and washdowns.
- Approvals include IMO Col Reg 72, USCG, ABYC A-16, and Maritime NZ.
Variants
This stern navigation light is offered in two housing color options.
The only stated difference across the range is the housing color, which affects how the light looks against your boat’s finish and hardware.
- 002984325: Black housing. A good visual match for darker transoms and rail hardware where you want the fixture to blend in.
- 002984375: White housing. A natural match for white gelcoat and lighter topsides where you want a cleaner, brighter look.
Installation and setup
Mount the base on a vertical surface at the stern in the correct orientation for a stern light, then route the wiring through the base plate. Once the wiring is terminated, the lamp body snaps onto the base for a clean finish that stays secure in vibration and routine handling.
Electrical and bulb service
This is a conventional incandescent setup, so keeping a spare 12V 25W BAY15d bulb on board makes sense for extended trips. When servicing, keep the lens area clean and dry, and make sure the cable grommet is seated properly after any wiring work.
Compliance and visibility
The 2 nautical mile rating and listed approvals make this a straightforward option when you need a compliant stern navigation light for night running and low-visibility conditions. Placement still matters, so install it where it has an unobstructed view aft and is not blocked by davits, outboards, or gear stored on the rail.
On-board fit and use
This light suits boats that are already set up for 12V incandescent navigation lighting and owners replacing an older stern fixture without changing the vessel’s lighting system. The non-magnetic housing is also helpful on smaller helms where navigation lights can end up closer to compasses and instruments.
Maintenance and care
Rinse salt off the exterior during routine washdowns and periodically check the base area for a tight seal around the cable grommet. If you notice dim output, intermittent operation, or corrosion at the contacts, address it early to avoid losing stern lighting when you need it most.
