Overview
The Blue Sea Systems m-Series Selector 3 Position Battery Switch is a manual battery selector for boats with two battery inputs and one shared load group. It is rated for 32V DC systems, with 300A continuous current, 500A for 5 minutes, and 900A starting current for 30 seconds, making it suitable for outboards and small gasoline or diesel engines.
This is a three-position selector switch, not a battery-combine model. It lets the operator feed onboard loads from one isolated battery bank or the other, while the OFF position allows the battery circuit to be shut down when the boat is stored, serviced, or left at the dock.
The m-Series format fits well in compact electrical layouts, battery compartments, and service panels where space, cable routing, and access all matter. Its IP66 rating, ignition protection, and tinned copper studs suit the wet, vibrating, and corrosive conditions found on marine electrical systems.
Key features
- Selector 3-position battery switch for managing two isolated battery inputs feeding a common onboard load group.
- 32V DC maximum voltage rating for common 12V and 24V marine electrical systems.
- 300A continuous rating, 500A intermittent rating for 5 minutes, and 900A starting rating for 30 seconds.
- Ignition protected for use aboard gasoline-powered boats where ignition protection is required.
- IP66 rating for resistance to spray and washdown exposure when installed in a suitable location.
- Tinned copper 3/8 in-16 (M10) terminal studs accept 3/8 in ring terminals and support 4/0 AWG cable sizing for the rated current.
- Case supports surface or rear panel mounting, with #10 mounting screw holes and 1.12 in cable clearance for 4/0 AWG cable.
- Meets ABYC requirements for battery switches, is UL Listed to UL 1107, and meets UL 1500 and SAE J1171 ignition protection requirements.
Variants
This m-Series selector switch is offered in two color configurations for different battery compartment, panel, or helm-area layouts.
Both variants share the same selector function, current ratings, terminal stud size, ignition protection, IP66 rating, and 32V DC maximum voltage. The visible switch color is the key difference between the two options.
- 6008: Red. The red case is easy to identify in a battery compartment or electrical panel, which can help during shutdown checks and service work.
- 6008200: Black. The black case gives a more subdued look on dark panels or helm-area electrical layouts while keeping the same m-Series selector function.
Installation and fit
Installation should be done with battery power isolated, and the positive battery terminal should be disconnected before mounting and wiring the switch. The terminal studs are intended for cable terminals mounted under the nut, with a specified torque of 120 in-lb (13.56 Nm).
To meet the published current ratings, use 4/0 AWG cable where required by the installation. Cable size, run length, circuit protection, and routing should match the boat electrical plan and the latest applicable marine electrical standards.
Electrical integration
This switch is useful where the boat has two battery banks and the operator needs manual control over which bank feeds the loads. It does not include alternator field disconnect and it is not a combine switch, so it should be wired as a selector for isolated banks rather than as a paralleling device.
The switch should not be turned to OFF while the engine is running. In real use, that makes it better suited for deliberate battery selection before starting, after shutdown, during service, or when securing the vessel at the dock.
Use cases on board
This product is a good match for small powerboats, fishing boats, center consoles, and auxiliary battery systems where a simple manual selector is preferred over automatic battery management. It gives the operator direct control of the battery source without adding networked controls or electronic switching modules.
Its combination of high current ratings, ignition protection, and marine-rated construction makes it practical for battery compartments, engine-adjacent service areas, and other locations where salt air, vibration, and occasional washdown exposure are part of normal boat life.
