Overview
The Garmin 010-02843-00 is an 18 in magnetron radome radar with 4 kW peak transmit power and a maximum range of 36 nm.
With a minimum range of 20 m and a steady 24 RPM rotation speed, it is well suited for picking out traffic in a busy inlet, keeping track of squalls moving in, and confirming buoy lines when visibility drops at night or in rain.
It runs on 11 to 32 V DC for common 12 V and 24 V systems and carries an IPX7 water rating for life on an exposed hardtop, arch, or mast. Overall size is about 20 in diameter by 9.8 in high, and it weighs 7 kg (15.4 lb.) for planning your mounting surface and pedestal.
Key features
- 4 kW peak output with 36 nm max range and 20 m minimum range.
- X-band radar (9.38 to 9.44 GHz) in an 18 in dome for installations where an open array is not practical.
- Power input 11 to 32 V DC with a 7.5 A fuse; typical draw is 15 W in standby and 40 W while transmitting.
- 24 RPM dome drive for consistent updates with low-noise operation.
- Dynamic auto gain and dynamic sea filter to keep the picture readable as sea clutter changes.
- Radar overlay and MARPA target tracking supported on compatible setups; MARPA requires a heading sensor.
- Network integration supports Garmin BlueNet and Garmin Marine Network installations (an adapter cable may be needed depending on the network hardware).
Compatibility and fit
This scanner is controlled from a compatible Garmin chartplotter over the Garmin marine network, so plan for an available network port (or a network switch/port expander) at the helm. If you want MARPA target tracking, a heading sensor is required, and a heading source also helps radar overlay line up cleanly on the chart.
For layout on board, the compass-safe distance is 1.2 m (3.9 ft.), which matters on sailboats and smaller pilothouses where the dome and compass can end up close together. Confirm you have overhead clearance for the 20 in diameter dome and space below the mounting surface for cable routing and bend radius.
Installation and setup
Mount the dome on a flat surface that sits parallel to the vessel waterline and can support the load underway. On a hardtop or cabin roof, a pedestal can help keep the radar beam clear of the roof edge, especially on boats that run with a higher bow angle.
Use the supplied mounting template, seal all fastener holes and deck penetrations with marine sealant, and secure the cable run so it is protected from chafe and sharp bends. Keep power and network cables away from high-heat sources and avoid running them parallel to other high-current wiring when possible.
Electrical and system integration
Run the power cable as close to the battery source as practical and keep connections clean and dry, especially in saltwater environments. If the power cable needs to be extended, use wire gauge appropriate for the added length so the radar still sees stable voltage while transmitting.
Before first power-up, confirm the in-line fuse is installed and that your distribution panel and battery bank can support the load during transmit periods, particularly on boats that spend long stretches at anchor.
Use cases on board
This dome radar is a strong match for center consoles, cruisers, and cruising sailboats that want networked radar on a Garmin chartplotter without committing to an open array. It is most useful for early-morning runs, foggy approaches, night entries, and anytime you want another layer of awareness around traffic and weather.
