Overview
The Raymarine E70097 is the EV-2 Sensor Core for Evolution autopilot systems on vessels with drive-by-wire steering. It combines the Evolution autopilot processor with a 9-axis solid-state sensor package in one sealed unit, monitoring heading, pitch, roll, and yaw so the autopilot can react to vessel motion and changing sea conditions.
This sensor core works on a 12 V dc supply with an operating voltage range of 10.8 V dc to 15.6 V dc and draws 30 mA. The housing is sealed for exposed marine locations, with IPX6 and IPX7 protection noted for washdowns and temporary submersion, and it can be mounted above or below deck depending on the layout of the helm, network backbone, and steering system.
Key features
- 9-axis sensing monitors vessel motion in three dimensions, including heading, pitch, roll, and yaw.
- Dynamic heading accuracy within 2 degrees helps support autopilot steering, radar overlay, MARPA, and heading modes on compatible Raymarine displays.
- SeaTalkng connectivity links the sensor core into Raymarine Evolution autopilot networks.
- Dedicated CAN Bus connection supports direct integration with compatible steer-by-wire systems, including ZF Pod Drives, Yamaha Helm Master, Volvo IPS, and SeaStar Solutions Optimus systems.
- Single CAN Bus connection can remove the need for a separate Autopilot Control Unit in supported drive-by-wire installations.
- Sealed enclosure supports above-deck or below-deck mounting where space, service access, and magnetic interference need to be considered.
- Compact body measures 140 mm in diameter with a depth of 35 mm including the mounting enclosure, or 95 mm including the wall bracket.
- Low NMEA 2000 network load with LEN 1 and power consumption of 30 mA.
Installation and setup
The EV-2 should be positioned where it has a stable relationship to the boat and is kept away from unnecessary magnetic interference. The sealed housing gives installers flexibility for helm, console, locker, or protected cockpit locations, while the included mounting hardware supports deck or wall-bracket mounting.
For drive-by-wire steering systems, the direct CAN Bus connection is the key installation difference. On compatible systems, the EV-2 can communicate with the steering system without adding a separate ACU, which reduces wiring and makes the autopilot layout cleaner.
Electrical and system integration
The unit connects to Raymarine SeaTalkng and operates from a 12 V dc system. It is suited to boats already using Raymarine multifunction displays, Evolution autopilot components, or SeaTalkng network cabling, especially where heading data is also used for radar overlay, MARPA target tracking, and autopilot heading control.
Marine use cases
This sensor core is a strong match for powerboats and modern helm systems that use electronic steering rather than a conventional mechanical or hydraulic autopilot drive setup. It suits coastal cruising, offshore running, and fishing boats where accurate motion sensing and fast heading data matter at the helm.
