Overview
The Victron Energy Smart BatteryProtect is a 12V/24V battery protection and load-disconnect device for DC systems that need to protect a battery bank from deep discharge. It operates across a 6-35V DC input range and automatically detects system voltage once, making it suitable for common 12V and 24V boat electrical systems when installed within its current rating.
It disconnects non-essential loads before the battery is drawn too low, or before there is too little reserve left to crank an engine. On cruising boats, fishing boats, and small commercial craft, that makes it useful for separating house loads such as lighting, electronics, pumps, refrigeration controls, or other DC circuits that should not drain the battery bank past a safe point.
Programming is handled by Bluetooth through VictronConnect, with adjustable engage and disengage levels. The unit can also be set with one of nine predefined voltage levels using the programming pin, and Bluetooth can be disabled when that suits the installation.
Key features
- 6-35V DC operating range with 12/24V auto-ranging for common low-voltage marine battery systems.
- Disconnects non-essential DC loads before excessive discharge damages the battery or leaves too little power for engine starting.
- Bluetooth setup through VictronConnect for adjustable engage and disengage voltage levels.
- Nine predefined voltage programs can be set with the programming pin when app setup is not used.
- On/off input can serve as a system on/off switch for a controlled DC load circuit.
- Electronics are potted with an IP67 rating, while the terminals are IP00 and should be mounted where connections are protected.
- MOSFET switching avoids relay sparks and supports ignition-proof operation for appropriate DC installations.
- Delayed alarm output, 90-second load disconnect delay, and 30-second reconnect delay help reduce nuisance trips during engine starts and short voltage dips.
- Special Li-ion setting allows control by a VE.Bus BMS in compatible Victron lithium battery systems.
Variants
The Smart BatteryProtect range is offered in three current ratings so the product can be matched to the load circuit it will control.
The amperage rating, terminal size, weight, and physical dimensions vary between variants. The 6-35V operating range, 12/24V auto-ranging behavior, Bluetooth programming, alarm timing, and electronic IP67 potting are consistent across these three models.
- BPR110022000, Amperage 100A. This version uses M8 connections and has a 61 x 41 x 164 mm body, which suits many house-load and distribution-feed installations where 65A is not enough.
- BPR122022000, Amperage 220A. This version uses M8 connections and has a 60 x 123 x 121 mm body, giving more current capacity for larger DC load banks that still require a one-way BatteryProtect installation.
- BPR065022000, Amperage 65A. This version uses M6 connections and has a 48 x 55 x 106 mm body, keeping the installation footprint small for lighter DC load circuits.
Installation and setup
The Smart BatteryProtect is a uni-directional device, so current must flow from the IN terminal to the OUT terminal. For load protection, the battery connects to the IN terminal and the load side connects to OUT. It is not a general bidirectional battery combiner, and it is not made for reverse current from charging sources.
Because the electronics are potted but the connections are IP00, the unit belongs in a protected electrical space such as a dry locker, electrical panel area, or battery compartment with proper terminal covers and strain relief. Use appropriately sized cable, circuit protection, and torque values for the selected model and the current carried by the circuit.
Electrical integration
The alarm output activates after the battery voltage stays below the preset disconnect level for more than 12 seconds. It is a short circuit proof open collector output to the negative rail with a maximum load of 50 mA, commonly used for a buzzer, LED, or relay input.
Over-voltage protection disconnects the load when DC voltage rises above 16.3V on a 12V system or 32.6V on a 24V system. Low current consumption also matters on boats left unattended at a mooring or dock, especially after a low-voltage shutdown.
Use on board
This product is a practical match for boat owners building or refitting a 12V or 24V DC system where house loads need automatic low-voltage protection. It is also useful when a remote on/off function is needed for a protected load circuit, as long as the installation follows the one-way current-flow requirement.
